Sumeet

Hi, I'm from the UK and my husband and I moved here in September 2014 for his job in Middlesex University in Vacaos. We live in Tamarin. Costs below are for both of us,

How much does it cost to live in Mauritius?

> accommodation prices  Rent Rs 32000/Month (3 bed detached house without pool, with study garden and veranda)

> public transportation fares (tube, bus etc.) Don't use

> food prices (your monthly budget)  Rs 20,000 - 25,000/Month - we shop in the supermarkets which are expensive. Shopping in Quatre Bornes market would be a lot cheaper

> health prices (for those who need medical insurance) Public health service is okay, though most have private insurance. We don't.

> education prices (if you need to pay)  Very expensive. We have a friend who needed an English school for her children. She hoped to find a local school but even places that said they spoke English used French/Creole a lot of time. She has had to pay for them to go to La Bocage, which is extremely expensive about 8000 pounds a year per person.

> energy prices (oil, electricity)  Rs 1100/Month ( Only electricity ) two people who use air con only for about 15 minutes at a time and uses fan rest of time.

> common bills (Internet, television, telephone, mobile phone)  Internet = 1500 a month (for fastest speed), mobiles are expensive here but airtime is super cheap: 500 lasted us over two months and we use it all the time.

> price for a good menu in a traditional restaurant - it's very expensive around Tamarin. We tend to spend 2000-2500 for a meal out for two.

> price for a coffee or a drink  Rs 90/Coffee

> price for cinema tickets  Rs 200/Person

Shopping of Clothes, Sandals, Small House hold  articles,  Expensive at places like Bagatelle, Jumbo etc. Go to Quatre Bornes, or buy suitable summer clothes before you come.

Our car insurance was Rs 14000 for both of us for a year. Cars are very expensive here, as second hand ones hold their value. You have to spend about 300,000 to get decent second hand car.

Thank and Regards
