Pickleball players in Mauritius?

Dear all

My husband and I are hoping to move to Mauritius from the UK next year and were wondering if there are any pickleball players in Mauritius?

Thanks everyone :)
Louise

No sorry. Not much demand in the market.
Someone already started a while back much before Covid and lost all his investment. Not sure if you are asking generally to involve yourself in the sport or wishing to start a business in this field.

You are moving from 21st century in UK to 19th century Mauritius. It is a small island with not much going on, unless it is water sports or walking/hiking. These areas need specialist equipment and too much investment. Market is already saturated by South Africans and Native Mauritians, so new comers will struggle in this field too and risk losing all their money.

Take my advice and thank me later.Research properly before you invest anything in Mauritius,and do not get your hands burnt. Mauritius is extremely poor so do not believe all the hype in the brochures.

Thanks very much for your reply.
We were purely just wondering if anyone played in Mauritius as we really enjoy the sport. That's all.
Many thanks
Louise

Hello Louise, Welcome on board!

You will find them playing in the North at Grand Bay, UrbanSport. There are dedicated pitches at Rs800/hour if I am not wrong. I am sure you will find players or people wanting to try out quite easily although seems like a new game here. Could be very interesting!

All the best,
Anou

Thanks Anou that's really helpful!

If you become a member of Gymkhana club then you can try with your membership.I am a member and can introduce you. Not open to all members though. All the best

Thanks very much. That's really kind.
Much appreciated
Louise

Hi. I'm coming to Mauritius for 3 weeks (from Canada)  at the start of January 2023. I am an avid PB player.

are there decent courts and is there any chance of getting a game in or two? If yes, what is entailed?

Thank you!!

Good question! We haven't found any players or courts here yet in the west. Would love to know if anyone has! We have a net but need the facilities. Please help :)

You can play a version of Pickleball on grass or hard sand if you have a portable net. We play in our garden in England and on the beach at low tide. We use a short tennis ball made of foam which has a better bounce but otherwise it's Pickleball in all but name. I've also played on grass in La Reunion so it ought to be possible in Mauritius!

Yes but we would like to play other people on a hard (purpose) court.  They seem to be building a lot of padel courts here but it would be much cheaper to create proper pickleball courts as you can play indoors or outdoors.

@WackyWombat  I woud be curious if by now if you have been able to play Pickleball. I will be coming to Mauritius by end of this month and would like to have a few games. Thanks for letting me know.

@Mado_vie

I'm afraid not.  We are living in the west and there are no pickleball courts here at all.  Someone has mentioned that they may have one (or be building one) in the north near Pamplemousses but that is too far for us to travel regularly.

It is such a shame as pickleball is a very versatile sport - very easy for youngsters to pick up, great for all ages (including retired), and it is a much cheaper investment in terms of building the court than something like tennis or padel.  It seems mad that it hasn't taken off here.  Anyway, I look forward to any further news of pickleball development in Mauritius - if anyone knows anything, please keep me updated...

@WackyWombat

Would it be possible for you to start introducing the game where you are? if you have a portable net, you could rent a badminton court and find two other persons. I usually play on badminton court, I don't have a net. It just need to get started and in the long run people might get interested.  You could propose to introduce it to youngsters as an after programme school or elderly. May be you could contact  active Mauritius (https://www.active-mauritius.com/about/. Just an idea.

Yes in theory as we have a net, apart from there are no badminton courts here in the west.  Closest I believe are in Rose Hill (unless anyone can advise me differently).  You can't play on a padel court because of the barriers around the court.  Happy to contact active Mauritius! Please keep coming up with suggestions :).

Thanks

Louise

Just for info... I have emailed Active Mauritius.

Great that you had emailed Active Mauritius and I hope you will obtain a positive response. May be you could also contact the district council in your region or the Mauritius Sport Council.

This year at the African Games in Ghana, there will be a demonstration of pickleball, Pickleball has been gaining popularity in many African countries. I came across an article (https://univers.ug.edu.gh/2023/10/25/gh … can-games/) detailing the upcoming demonstration, and I couldn't help but think of the potential for this sport in Mauritius. These people in the youtube video introduced Pickleball in Ghana youtu.be/X_fkJa3J1Ug?feature=shared ;

As you said it is a more affordable sport than tennis or padel and easier to learn to play.  Let's hope there are other people in the forum who are interested to play and could help move it forward.  It's amazing to see how many African countries have embraced pickleball, with some even having proper courts for the sport.  One can also play pickleball on tennis courts if the proper markings are available. I have also played on tennis court in Zurich with the markings, which one can also prepare oneself. But I can understand that finding tennis courts can also be a challenge.

You have already mentioned how this sport could be beneficial to all ages and I am hopeful that sooner or later we will also have this exciting sport in Mauritius too.   If you find time and a few people interested to be introduced to this sport, I could also join you and we could rent a badminton court in Rosehill for a start. Please keep me posted!
