Hi everyone.
I am a new member and am hoping to move to Malta next summer along with my husband. However, we are not able to retire at the moment and will need to work to be able to support ourselves.
My husband has 30+ years experience in High street banking with a vast proportion of that being in the small business sector. I have 16 years experience working in education as a Science Technician up to and including 'A' level. I also have good admin and computer skills.
Do you think that we will have difficulty securing employment when we come to Malta? Do they have Job Centres or something similar where we can send our CV's before we arrive?
I think employment is our main worry. We spent some time on a recent trip to Qawra this summer looking at the housing possibilities - I think we would probably rent at first.
Any advice that you can give will be gratefully received.
We are so excited about moving but are equally daunted by all the things we need to be aware of.
I'm sure I will be spending a lot of time on this forum in the next few months.
Bye for now :)

I don't think people with good qualifications and a background as you describe have anything to worry about, there is plenty opportunities here. Its a case of deciding where you want to be working and living then compromise slightly. Build a data-base and start mailing your CV's. There is also plenty opportunity to start your own small business over here maybe worth concidering if you are looking to slow into retirement a small business could give you time together while pay the bills. Malta Enterprise is just like any of the UK Enterprise schemes to attaract business to Malta and they have loads of information on starting up businesses here. Many companies might shy away from you if they feel you are only going to be with them a short time. There has been a few posts recently about teaching so have a look down them. I should think Computing skills here could be a winner, something like informal learning classes. Any help I can be please ask and I am sure you will find the same from many of the other expats on the forum. Jim n Bev

Hi and welcome to the forum.

Decent employment will certainly be the issue for you.

I wouldn't start sending out CV's until a few months before you are planning to relocate to Malta. The same goes for real estate agents. The markets move to fast here in Malta. A few weeks before you come should be fine.

The Maltese public and private schools effectivly block out foreign teachers through Maltese language requirements and I admit I had to research what a Science Technician does. Now that I know I'm not sure if that even exists here in Malta. There are several independent international schools so there might be options there. I can ask friends for more info if you want .

There is the Maltese equivalent of job centres , the ETC (Employment and Training Corporation) where you can register. But there again I don't think it makes too much sense to do that in advance. In Malta it is always better to go and talk to people in person and eye-to-eye.

Your husband will have good chances as a banker-more so if he has experience in international offshore banking, accounting and so on. Malta is trying to push itself as an international banking location.

So browse through past posts and feel free to post any questions that might arise.

One last piece of advice: Don't even consider buying property in Malta before you have lived here for several years.

As Jim already said , good qualifications and experience are always an asset. Just don't expect UK salaries unless your husband decides to be CEO of HSBC-)))

Cheers

LOL! CEO would be nice, but I think he feels he should be taking things easier these days.

If you could ask your friends about the international schools, that would be great. I'm compiling a folder of all the things we will need to do before we come, with websites, email addresses etc. for future reference.
I wonder if they do a science related degree at the University?

Thank you so much for the advice.

Regards
Fiona :)

Myrkur

just go to um.edu.mt which the University of Malta site and you can find out what courses they offer there.

Hi ,

I just got feedback from a Maltese private school teacher.

They do have the position here in Malta and her private school employs a Science Technician. The language requirements would depend on the school so contact the private schools directly.

The salary would definitly be Maltese , which means not that good ! The state run schools would definitly ask for Maltese language degrees.

Cheers

Hi ,

I'm not quite sure if the other post is what you are looking for but it certainly would not require Maltese language as you are dealing with cadaveric specimens ! Yuck !

Payment starts at around 13.000 € and increases ( with the number of cadavers?) over the years -)))

Cheers

Thanks for that info Ricky :)
Yuck is definitely the word I would use too.

Thanks to everyone for their help and advice so far, it has been very useful to us.
We probably won't be looking at job opportunities for at least another 10 - 12 months but knowing where to look for vacancies is a great help.

many thanks
Fiona
