In recent years, Vienna has become a popular destination with professionals looking to boost their career abroad. With a vibrant economy and a steady unemployment rate, the Austrian capital city has a lot to offer. Here are some tips for finding a job in Vienna.

Job hunting in Vienna

As mentioned in our previous article “Labour market in Vienna,” there are many ways to landing that dream job of yours. One way of getting a step closer to reach your goal is by searching online on national and international job portals. The most well-known are Stepstone, Willhaben, Wiener Jobs, Monster, Vienna Jobs and the job section of the newspaper “der Standard.”

Another way is to try and get directly relocated through the company you are currently working for. If you are employed at one of the big international organisations such as UNO or IAEO, this should not be too hard as they all have headquarters in Vienna. Do not worry, though, if this is not the case for you. There is plenty of other fish in the sea as the city has become a significant hub across Europe.

If you are highly qualified, especially in the business sector or healthcare, you will have no difficulty in finding the right fit for you.

Most jobs in Vienna can be found in the service sector, more specifically in the tertiary sector. Around 85% of the revenue generated in Vienna is made within it, which marks the majority.

Viennas’ tourism sector has been going through the roof lately as more and more visitors from all over the world come here daily. The city benefits from being a year-round destination with many different festivals and attractions varying from season to season.

Therefore it is not surprising that the hospitality and tourism job sector is thriving as well. So you can find a high demand for skilled workers even if you do not have a highly qualified university degree.

If you are amongst those people that carry a high qualification in engineering, data processing, economy, or consulting, you can call yourself lucky as there are many vacancies within these fields.

Language requirements for working in Vienna

Very important is having sufficient knowledge of the German language. Even if you seek employment with an international organisation, it is going to be very useful, as many of your coworkers are going to be Austrians or Germans. So if you want to be able to enjoy a conversation that is beyond some small talk and chitchat, you should consider taking language lessons and obtaining a certificate. Knowing a few words in “Wienerisch” will increase your popularity instantly!

That being said, most of the jobs will require you to bring along that said certification even more so if you have to apply for a work permit. In Austria, expats are required to show evidence of at least necessary German skills before relocating! You can acquire a diploma from many institutions, the most famous being the Goethe Institut. Not only will this increase your chances of landing your dream job but also make life way more comfortable.

Whenever you are feeling overwhelmed by the amount of information crashing down on you whilst planing your move, consider consulting a relocation agency as they can take some weight off your shoulders and help you realise the dream of starting a new life in Vienna.
