Schools in Liège

Hi,
Well we've finally decided to live in Beaufays (where there's a rugby club) so thank you for all your replies.
For the younger 2 children school is not a problem, but for my eldest I am still in search of a good school (He speaks French so it doesnt have to be bi-lingual)

Someone recommended College St Benoit, St Servais. 
Does anyone know of it??  If so I'd love to hear your thoughts

No bilingual schools in Liege. The only "bilingual" schools in Belgium are private and very very mixed record in actually getting children bilingual.

There are a few schools which do English immersion for French speaking children in Liege, but this is entirely different to bilingual and not going to be suited to children who can speak English already.

Hardly any team sports in schools. Easy to find club sports though, just google "club rugby Liege" etc.

Liege is also a very big place, hard for anyone to recommend.

Hi, there's also a good sports area (on the google map link), which is very popular when it's nice weather, where you can do any one of: football, athletics, basketball, tennis, volleyball, (etc) either outside or in the sports hall. Normally there are informal games which you can join-in with. Cointe Sports Area

Helen you have probably already discovered that schools admissions for 1st secondary (this year children born 2000 or even older) is done primarily on distances between primary and secondary and home. In your case, without a primary, if you have applied, you would have been given the average score, as is given to all children who are not at French Community schools - those coming from abroad, those at Flemish or German Community schools, those at international schools, those who are home schooled.

Nearest secondaires to Beaufays I suppose must be Institut Ste Julienne and College Episcopal du Sartay, both in Embourg area, the latter attracts the "rich" children. I know nothing about either school. It's important to know whether a school is a traditional acdemic one or whether it is a technical or professional school, some schools offer all 3 - general academic, technical and professional. The division does not start until 3rd secondary, 1st and 2nd secondary follow a common 28 hours, same in every school in  the French Community, and 4 hours of options set by the school, these 4 hours of options can affect the choices later on still.

College Episcopal du Sartay offers general academic - it's easy to tell from the website and score of 20 on socio-economic index that this is the most desirable school in the area I would imagine.

It's not surprising someone has recommended St Benoit-St Servais - it's one of the most academic schools in the centre of Liege, but a long way from Beaufays! Unless you're travelling to the centre of Liege every day, it wouldn't seem a wise choice.

Here is a map of primaries/maternelles in the greater Liege area - will try and add Chaudfontaine/Beaufays schools to it. I could do a secondary one too, but it might be too hard work, let's see.

As you were advised on xpats.com, the best places for you to live would NOT be Liege as in fact you stated you will be working in Seraing. Try instead the areas you were advised to look at east of Seraing, such as Sart Tilman, Chenee, Embourg etc. to live.

If you're not the person on xpats.com, my greatest apologies and go with the schools in central Liege if you are simply asking about Liege. Sorry if I ' m wrong.

If you're the persno on xpat.com who is going to be working in Seraing, best live east of Seraing. for choice of secondaire, College Episcopal du Sartay in Embourg is one of the highest regarded school in that area, I'd be looking especially at that school. Other ones to look at are Athenee Royal de Chenee and College St Joseph in Chenee.  These 3 schools are as good as you'll get in that area.

If you fancy living instead more centrally, then I'd go for Sainte-Veronique as first choice, St Jacques, Leonie de Waha.  2 of those schools do English immersion, not that it will help your children's English but there will be lots of staff more used to speaking English with parents.

Furthermore, you should know that if your 11 year old is born in 2007, you will need to apply centrally for a place in SECONDAIRE 1 or S1.  You must apply to your number 1 choice school NOW for the "formulaire unique d'inscription or FUI which needs to be submitted to your number 1 choice school between 11th Februay and 1st March. You get "average" points for this central enrolment for the 11 year old, this actually might be quite advantageous so long as oversubscribed schools don't receive more than double applications as first choice as there are places.

So now you have the names of 3 schools east of Seraing to look closely at and 3 schools in the centre of Liege. A relocation agent would have charged 100s of euro for that information.
