No, you do not need to be currently employed at the exact moment you submit your application for Belgian nationality.

However, you must still fulfill the strict economic integration requirements tied to the standard 5-year residency route. This means that while you can be unemployed or between jobs when you walk into the commune to apply, you must prove your past economic participation:

1. Worked at least 468 days as a paid employee, or

Also, the time of unemployment between 2 jobs should not exceed 90 days or 3 months. So make sure you secure a new job before leaving the current one. Because when you get a new job there will be a paperwork that might take up to 3 months which could fill the unemployment gap.

I know it is stressing but the current government is a bit strict and they will look at this. I mean you never know how long your application for citizenship will take.
