I just posted asking for advice on good doctors or hospitals in Vung Tau.

I would appreciate very much for your descriptions of the healthcare situation in Vung Tau.   What happened if an ex-pat gets sick, from common dysenteries to a severe sudden illness?  is it possible to visit professional health facilities in Vung Tau, or one has to go to Ho chi Minh.  And thus, my question would extend to TP Ho chi Minh area.

A list of Vung Tau medical centres (and hospitals) can be found here.

Vung Tau is a very tourist/western oriented city, with modern medical facilities.

I'm sorry I can't make specific recommendations for you or for MikeTVN. I've been to Vung Tau several times, but was there each time for only a short duration.

Perhaps other members will be able to help by sharing their experiences.

I thought about sending you a reply to this in the private message thread we've had going for a few years now.

I'll send you a link to this reply instead but maybe some of this information will be helpful to the casual reader.

You (being Việt Kiều) are in the unique position of being able to connect with Vietnamese families much easier than other foreigners.

I can assure you that with trustworthy recommendations for introductions, the local good citizens of Vũng Tàu will want to do everything possible to make sure that you are safe and that any special assistance you need is provided.

In your situation, that's a shame that Ciambella and her husband have moved out of the country, because if you had moved into her nephew's apartment building where they resided (the previous plan) any problems you would have had would have received immediate attention from the landlords.

I once had some sort of an inflammation developing on my lower leg, and the nephew's wife (who was the real landlord) insisted on personally taking me to the local hospital emergency room (Vietsovpetro Medical Center) and ensuring that I received appropriate care.

However the good news is that the new landlords are wonderful people who treated my wife and I especially well when we were preparing to leave town for our official marriage.

I've been waiting to hear that your arrival is imminent so I can share personal contact info for some people with you.

The universal answer throughout this country is that personal connections are going to serve you much better than attempting to get all questions and concerns answered ahead of time.

The trade-off is that it requires a bit of vulnerability and allowing people to become privy to some of your private affairs.

To the degree that you are willing to do that here, I think you will find it to be pretty smooth sailing for a Việt Kiều lady from America.

@Digga juz My work used Liberty for the last 4 years and in hindsight it was excellent. Every single hospital i visited across the country was direct billing so i didn't have to pay anything, just handed over my membership card.

My monthly prescriptions were quickly sorted and paid, and i often had scans such as MRIs approved quickly and billed directly. It covered physio, work permit health checks, annual health MOTs etc etc with minimum fuss. I was very confident in their product.

Contrast this to "Cigna" who we have just moved to and they're truly terrible.

No hospital here seems to accept direct billing from Cigna so you have to pay up front and claim (even though the policy covers 100% pretty much everything, it's still risky) Cigna have no office in Vietnam so they are difficult to contact and are very slow to respond via email. You have to go through to an Indian call centre if calling their premium number and their English is terrible with very generic advice.

I presume Cigna is cheaper than liberty, but the old adage you get what you pay for holds true here for sure!
