Is carry a joint a ticket to big trouble in Cebu?

I'm considering to settle in Cebu and would appreciate some honest, first-hand experiences about a specfic subject:

I'm interested in understanding how recreational cannabis use is viewed and enforced in practice in Cebu City and the surrounding tourist areas.

Have any long-term expats personally experienced or witnessed how the authorities deal with adults found in possession of a very small amount for personal use? Even it is for medical reasons. I'm particularly interested in actual experiences and legal consequences, rather than rumours.

I understand that cannabis is illegal in the Philippines. I'm not asking where to buy it, but would appreciate factual, firsthand information about the practical risks for foreign residents and visitors.

Thank you for sharing your experiences.

@liondon

There is a certain irony to your post. You are a Dutch national and presumably it hasn't escaped your attention  that a certain Rodrigo Duterte is currently in detention at the International Criminal Court (ICC) in the Hague.

Does that answer your question?

There is no such thing as medical marijuana in the Philippines.   Possession of less than 300 grams draws 12 - 20 years in prison.  Perhaps you should get a lifetime of weed consumed before going to the Philippines.

Smoking & ******* in Amsterdam will never happen in the Philippine.

Richard Nixon declared the U.S. "war on drugs" in June 1971 and signed the U.S. Controlled Substances Act in 1970. The Philippine legislation in 1972 followed closely as part of a broader international shift in drug policy influenced by U.S. pressure and global conventions.

Thanks, Dick.

Hello liondon

Welcome to the forum! 😊

Since cannabis is illegal in the Philippines, people with firsthand experience of how the law is enforced might be hesitant to share their stories publicly. And those who have faced legal consequences may not be in a position to reply; they could even be behind bars....

As far as I understand, there are no exceptions for personal use. I would recommend doing thorough research before embarking on this new adventure.

All the best,

Cheryl

Recreational cannabis use is strictly illegal, socially taboo, and aggressively enforced across Cebu City and the surrounding tourist areas under the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002 (RA 9165).

• Zero Tolerance: Cannabis in all forms—including dried flower, edibles, CBD oil, and THC vapes—is classified as a dangerous drug. There is no legal distinction made for recreational or foreign medical prescriptions.

• Simple possession of small amounts under 300 grams carries a statutory prison sentence ranging from 12 years to 20 years.

• Possession of 500 grams or more, or any amount linked to selling, transport, or cultivation, escalates to life imprisonment and heavy fines up to 10 million PHP, (US$156,262.20, €140,467.80)

I've watched the programes on TV, "Locked up abroad", and my gawd, you don't want to be locked up in the Philippines!
