Blue bird, being the top quality, professional company they are, called me within an hour to sort out what was what.

That's quality customer service.

Fred, I'm surprised they tried it on with you even though your had your GPS and the fact you speak the lingo there..

He was playing silly buggers from the moment I got into the taxi so I made it clear I knew where I wanted to go and made sure he saw the GPS but he still went the wrong way from the start.
I pointed this out as soon as he took the wrong road but he still tried to mess around.
Eventually, I used my best 'Paddington bear' angry voice and gave the sod instructions. As soon as we were back on a main road, I ordered (yes - ordered) him to stop and got out.
I toyed with the idea of not paying but that would have left me in the wrong as well so I paid up the exact amount on the meter.

LOL. On Sunday I was in Jakarta, took a cab from Kemang to Tomang. As I'm not a Jakartan, I activated my GPS on my phone (as always).
On the map the route seems straightforward, but halfway through it, the driver took a different route. Let's say, if the direction on the map/gps is to the West, he took the direction to the East...then to god knows where...I was scratching my head like wth, does this guy know what he's doing??? LOL
From my GPS I can see he was circling around, muppet !
Suffice to say we took double the time than if he just take the normal route.
I reckon this incident would've happened in 1 of 3 using Bluebird. But I have never had any such experience with Cipaganti.

Another one, with Ojek driver from Tomang to Tanah abang which is a mere 2.5 km. Knowing I'm not from around the block (from the number of bags on my back), the driver asked Rp 25rb, I said dude, you dont even waste half a litre of gas, 25rb is too much...
He's embarrassed getting caught trying to rip me off. what he did was taking me to various "rat roads" just to demonstrate that the distance is worth the initial asking price :D
On my return way, I pretend to be local and the driver took me back in half the time.

I grow to tolerate such practice, good for you to report the incident. Those people desperately need a good lesson.

Fred

I use Blue bird a lot and have had very few problems.
I find their people to be generally professional.

This has happened just twice in three years so I can't believe Blue bird are any serious problem.

I find their Android app very handy.

tempo

Yeah, perhaps you are correct about Bluebird.
I'm not a regular taxi user, only when I'm in Jakarta.
There's a case where the driver genuinely didn't know (judging from the body language and all).

Fred

The Indonesian word, "Gratis" means, "free" as in, at no charge.
The Indonesian word, "Babas" means, "free" as in, not having inside.

In Indonesian, as in French, the subject and object are reversed in any given sentence.
ie - the blue pen becomes, the pen blue.

English is a national hobby in Indonesia but even the big advertising companies commonly cock up.

A week or so ago, I posted a link to a TV program called, The toughest place to be a bin man".
Last Monday, I visited the area and met Pak Imam.

The TV program was 100% bang on.

Fred - On your previous posts, i see pics of locals who collect plastic water bottles & card board for selling these one and hence re-cycling. So is the re-cylcling done by locals only who want to earn a few extra bob?

I did see your posting of the "Toughest place to be a bin man" haven't watched it yet, but will do shortly... i think it will be an interesting clip judging by the photos you've just posted.

Gratis is actually a loan word from the Dutch language, you'll find the word gratis in Dutch, French, German, Spanish, etc.
Quite a few Indonesian words are taken from Dutch (or Portuguese), such as kado (gift), kantor (office), handuk (towel), besuk/membesuk (to visit)...

Umm...you meant, the order of the adjective (blue) and the noun (pen). In Indonesian it's called hukum diterangkan-menerangkan.
Both Indonesian and English use the same subject-verb-object word order. Whereas the Japanese language has a subject-object-verb word order :D

While we're on the subject of bin man, allow me to post this (sorry to hijack your picture thread, mas Fred :)):

Not to earn a few extra bob; more to earn a few bob so they can eat.
This isn't a side job for most, it's daily life.

Hear, hear, well said Fred!

Every country has its dark underbelly and Indonesia is no exception.  The urban squalor and abject poverty of Indonesia’s major cities…Jakarta obviously being top, is right up there with what can be seen in other vastly populated urban sprawls in the world.

As ironic as the smiles on the faces of those in the middle of this quandary seems to be, this is a hallmark of Indonesians, regardless if trapped in urban environments, eking out a living along the endless miles of Indonesian coastline, or working their flesh to the bone on the farms and sawahs.

Rich or poor, Indonesians have a great deal of pride and nobility and it’s always impressed me how little the sense of entitlement that exists here even amongst the poorest of the poor.

The people is what really makes this country.
Thailand is supposed to be the land of smiles but Indonesians make them look grumpy.

I love this country, its people and, bonus, the food is fantastic.

Hey Fred - hows that bridge doing? The one you posted a while back?
it had a giant hole and it just got worse and worse, till they repaired it. Is it still in good order? ..hope so.. :D

Fred

Fred is a massive stud and a real man, not some namby pamby mummy's boy so, when I hit my shin, I simply dismissed it as nothing.
However, the wound went bad, my leg started to look like some sort of massive, very fat sausage so I went to the hospital to get it sorted.
I won't be posting any photos of my disgusting wound because I know they've make any normal people sick (The Nickers have seen them because they aren't normal people).
I was a few miles from home but I just wandered into the first Doctor I saw on my travels as things were getting painful.
The quack took one look and sent me to the hospital, pointing out a place about 500m away.
There I went.

http://i456.photobucket.com/albums/qq281/fredyboys/DSCF4076_zps537470b6.jpg

They have an ambulance (If you can afford it) and all the mod cons.

As with all hospitals, they have a reception where you book in.

http://i456.photobucket.com/albums/qq281/fredyboys/DSCF4070_zpsa47e27f1.jpg

Most hospitals here have security guards. They don't seem to do much securing, more to assist customers.
They also open the doors for you.

http://i456.photobucket.com/albums/qq281/fredyboys/DSCF4079_zpsa95a60ff.jpg

The medical team were really good.
I've seen two doctors so far and both were great. I have to say, the hospital staff were absolutely fantastic; they showed real care and attention.
Here they are.

http://i456.photobucket.com/albums/qq281/fredyboys/DSCF4084_zpsc25f61a7.jpg

The hospital pharmacy is pretty much the same as most.

http://i456.photobucket.com/albums/qq281/fredyboys/DSCF4072_zpsa44222c6.jpg

The bit that looks different to a UK hospital is this - you have to pay.

http://i456.photobucket.com/albums/qq281/fredyboys/DSCF4075_zpsab12a836.jpg

Fred

Mental illness - again.
This guy hasn't had a bath for a while, sleeps under a bridge and wanders around with a load of junk and a smashed guitar that has an extra hole in it and no strings.

http://i456.photobucket.com/albums/qq281/fredyboys/DSCF4046_zps13b9b110.jpg

No one will ever look after his needs and, should he get seriously ill from bad food or something, most will assume he's drunk or mad and just leave him to die.
That and no hospital would help him out so, sooner or later, he'll probably die on the street.

In the UK, ramps are quite common to allow disabled access; here they are equally common but there to allow you to get the motorbikes up the steps.

A little street restaurant.

http://i456.photobucket.com/albums/qq281/fredyboys/DSCF4051_zpsc5c43c97.jpg

The building site over the road tossed out the table but waste isn't something that happens here. There's always someone who can use something.

Business must keep going so a brolly and a tarp get used.

The building boom is still on so houses and shop houses are going up everywhere.
The price to buy and/or rental prices are far more than you can possibly make a profit on any business you care to set up in one but the price is the price.
That's where there are so many empty ones.

These are brand new so there has been very little time for anyone to faint when they find out the price.

http://i456.photobucket.com/albums/qq281/fredyboys/rain/SAM_0474_zps2c0453ae.jpg

The workers who build the houses usually live in shacks like this one.

A street scene with goats chomping on rubbish is far from uncommon here.

http://i456.photobucket.com/albums/qq281/fredyboys/rain/DSCF4090_zpsb2bad415.jpg

I went for my driving licence yesterday.
Things are less than perfect on the roads here and the licence situation is one of those things.
However, I did what I was told and walked out with a brand spanking new licence but I'm less than sure the price I paid was entirely correct. I must find out the actual price so I can be sure.

Outside the place; this lovely example of a prime condition racing machine was parked.

It was about 11am and I was on the way home from getting a new licence.
That road is usually much busier as it was a few hours later when we went to a large mall.
I won't be doing that again on a Saturday.
