HI everyone
I am doing my honours this year and have decided on doing my research paper on 'nation branding and identity: a self study of being a ZImbabwean living in South Africa'.
I would like to hear your opinions, both ZImbabweans and South Africans, your experiences of being in SA, how SA people treat you, how the media portrays ZImbabwe in the media etc

Stories and experiences of people in the same position as myself is very valid to my research. I look forward to sharing my story and hearing your stories.

Hi Kyrie,

It's a pity I got here so late. But Edeline is right. I actually find that Zimbabwean society in the diaspora is the least homogenous of all. You get Nigerians hanging out together at the same places and tending to occuppy the same strata in South African society. You find communities of Croatians, Greeks, Portuguese that meet formally and support each other such that you wont find the poor among them. We are very fragmented and selfish, so even when this cruel society despises the poor among us, the rest of us are bust looking out for ourselves, and earning more money by looking good to our clients and bosses is our primary occupation. I think what we miss is the kind of vision that European settlers had when they came. They planned for the long haul, and their descendants have benefited. We seem to be very short term in our thinking and ignore the fact that we can actually make Zimbabwean society in the diaspora less diverse economically so that more of us are in positions of influence and wealth despite the odds.
