Hi,

we would like to start to explore the less touristy parts of Malta. We have two small children and a dog and do not own a car, so we would like to stay couple of nights in a small hotel or B&B and explore on foot. Can anyone recommend an area to visit or a place to stay, preferable within walking distance to the sea.

Thank you

Evi

Will you hire a car, or if not, how will you get to the accommodation ? Bear in mind that dogs are not allowed on buses unless can fit in a carrier that can go on your lap

You can go to most places by bus. So anywhere is good. St. Paul's is nice for kids in the summer
as they have a free small water park.

Hi,

we do not plan to hire a car, either we take a bus or pay for pick up or taxi.
Yes, I know that officially we can not take our dog on the bus, however I have some friends who took their dog  ( a big one) on leash (without a carrier). Not that I am planning to try with two kids to be denied transport because of our dog:)

I am thinking country walks, maybe a working farm or vineyard (something similar to agroturismo), so the less touristy the better.

We live in Gzira, so doing the touristy things is not a problem, but exploring the countryside I need some recommendation.

Thanks

I've got some suggestions for B&Bs in Gozo, where the owners welcome dogs - of interest ?

matm911

In Marsaskala you can you can walk along the shore for kilometers (either to Xghajra/Vittoriosa or Marsaxlokk/Birzebbuga) with dogs and children, you can go to one of the children playgrounds near St. Thomas Bay, Harbor promenade or visit the new Sant Antnin Family Park (there's even a dog playground) ... and there are lots of flats also for daily rent, resp. Cerviola, Sensi or Etvan Hotel

Yes, please. We definitely would like to go to Gozo for a long weekend in the near future.

Any recommendation for a place to stay in Marsaskala or along the shore?

Thank you again

1. Dave and Jenny Carter’s B&B. Charming, rustic B&B in the centre of Qala .. No under 16s, no smoking, but dog lovers welcome ! http://www.gogozobandb.com/bandb/main.asp jennyscott@onvol.net 21550603 - donation to Gozo SPCA if you mention them

2. Hibiscus Bed and Breakfast, Gozo - Hibiscus House is a friendly, English family run original Gozitan farmhouse, parts of which date back over three hundred years. Situated on the south side of the island in the village of Sannat, the property retains many of its original features: pretty courtyards, vaulted rooms, arched walkways and stone stair cases. The property offers both B&B and self catering more details, including prices, can be found on their website http://www.hibiscusbedandbreakfast.com- donation to Gozo SPCA for any bookings mentioning Gozo SPCA

I know people who have stayed at both, and really enjoyed

Hi Evi,

on a Ramblers walk today we visited the new St. Antnin park in Marsascala and we were impressed! I'm sure it is fun for kids- small or over 12 , and it even has a dog park.

Even we adults had a good workout on the fitness activities and slides-)))

It also includes an animal farm with donkeys, rabbits, goats, chicken and so on.

Cheers
Ricky

The Outdoor Gym is cool, isn't it :)
Have you seen the football field? It's plastic grass, but looks pretty good.
Some parts are not finished yet and it's not so green as shown on the flyer but it's definitely a tourist magnet :D
On the side to the street and to the Inspire also a Water Course is planned ... all this should be finished latest in July for the St. Anna feast ... we'll see ;)

@ Evi,
Since I live here I have never asked for any prices or private b&b locations, but friends stayed last autumn at the Cerviola Hotel at around 25,- for a double bed room - but I don't know if dogs are allowed, you should call and ask.
I suppose Etvan Hotel, Sensi Hotel and St. Thomas Apartments will have the same (low) rates of 20-40,-/night ... because the Hotel standard here is not comparable with those in Sliema or St. Julians ;)
The Lemon & Lime Irish Pub and Platinum Holiday Apartments (from 47SummerNights) also rent rooms at about this range of prices.

But remember: It's the South - so please call them to get the latest prices and infos about availability, don't expect a fast email response and also their web-sites are not always up to date ;)
