Okay, second time I've gotten a henna tatoo and both times, rather than turning out dark brown, they're orange (blah!).

Anybody have any theory for this?

Wilson

If you put lemon juice on the paste while it is still on your skin it helps the henna stain your skin better and darker   :P

Alliecat

@Wilson I think you're messing with me!  Lemon juice is the way to REMOVE the henna! :P

TheLegendLeads

I know of adding tamarind water into the mixture.

Alliecat

Actually, I just talked to somebody 'in the know' and she said I needed to leave it on for 24 hours to make it dark.  This, for me, is impossible.

Wilson

yea its true you have leave it on 24 hours to get dark brown.

Test again, apply at night and sleep and next morning it will be dark brown

But won't that smear the henna? :P

Wilson

After sometime when its dry wrap your hand inside the plastic bag ( caution: keep the plastic bag loosen :P

I didn't do it--got it at an event I attended :)

TheLegendLeads

Another vote came in for lemon juice. Do give it a shot.

ahhh

yeah, well the cheap stuff doesnt dye well.  it takes really good powder to last like you see for weddings and stuff.

Bruckner

Have you guys heard that story about that woman that recently almost lost her leg because of a tattoo?

Freshlikesushi

Its very possibly if it wasn't done correctly and got infected

Nothing ever happened to mine

Alliecat

And I'm sure that isn't an issue with henna tatoos ;)

Sure it isn't! I'm not a tattoo expert or anything like that. I'm an avid Daily Mail reader though, if that counts for anything...

Is it black yet?

Alliecat

@B  nah.... it will remain orange and gradually fade away.

Wilson

Well there is a saying with the color of the henna, that people who have done good deeds get the dark color of the henna and rest will get the faded one !!! :)

Mind you its just a saying !!!

Wilson

spicing up the henna tattoos

ghanshyampdave

Well, I'm not an expert on this subject, but I've heard that the color of the Henna (Mehendi) depends on your body heat (My granny used to say that).

We've even experimented this on my cousin sisters. Both applied it together and kept it on for about 8 hours.. and the color was brown on one cousin and orangish on the other.

Btw, I agree with the application of lemon juice.

Btwn-Fear-N-Hope

as far as i know, lemon juice is mixed into the henna paint along with this nasty smelling oil to make it darken on the skin.

if you cannot sleep with henna on your hands (taking the advice to wait till it dries and then covering your hands) then what one normally does is break off the dry henna from your hands, dont wash your hands but moisturise yours hands with oil and sleep.
this way your not worried about smudges or discolouration of bedsheets or body parts.

try it next time, you got nothing to loose - and i hope it works for you.

@Bruckner, yes there was an unsubstantiated story flying around through mainly text messages in UK, someone who applied henna had an adverse reaction which led to amputation. however i havent seen more than a text on this, so probably a bad rumour.

having said that, one should avoid black henna like the plague. people have had very bad reactions and life long scars left behind by them. the chemicals in black henna are dangerous.

natural henna which alliecat has clearly used is safe and takes ages  to darken.

I never said it was faded.  It's NOT.  It's deep and dark.  But it's ORANGE, not brown/black.
