Getting around Germany

Hey fellow ex-pats,
My boyfriend goes back to work tomorrow and I was wondering what the best ways are to get around the country. For instance, would you recommend busses or trains? I'd like to do day trips to see some of the cities nearby that I haven't made it to yet, but I don't want to go longer than a day.

How fast are the trains, and are they worth the cost? Would you recommend the bus services here? Are there other ways to get around that I don't know about?

Any help would be greatly appreciated, because otherwise its going to get very boring here. :D

Lisa

For trips out of town, trains are definitely the way to go!
There are no long-distance buses and very few other options (except driving yourself).
There are various day-tickets and other promotions that might be useful for your purpose, check www.bahn.de

just rent a car with GPS
believe me this the best way to discover europe :)

I've got to admit that I'm not totally comfortable driving on the right side of the road. We drive on the left in Australia, and although I've been driving for about 1o years back home, I'm still not used to it here. Otherwise I'd be able to take our car.
