America is vast. It’s people vary greatly. In my opinion, individualism is strong. American culture is real, not abstract. It’s worth understanding.

Americans can be direct. But also can be friendly. Particularly outside of big cities.

The metric system is less common. People will tell you it’s 77 degrees outside and not understand why you seem confused.

English is core. But many speak it as a second language. Time is valued. For example, being late to a meeting can be off putting. If you’re going to be late, give a heads up if you can.

Often Americans are open about sharing their views and exercising their freedom. It may be uncommon for someone outside the USA to hear strong criticism of their government in public. In America, that is just another news cycle.

The contradictions can seem strong. For example, some Americans may speak vocally against firearms. Their neighbor may keep a firearm in their car. Americans don’t like being told what to do, how to live, or what to believe. Particularly by their own government. Note: aggressive conversations with Americans about their individual religious beliefs may not end well.

America has stunning national and state parks and outdoor attractions.

Americans like their dogs. Football. Big grocery stores. Free beverage refills. Cars. BBQ. Not always, but it is common. It’s not a perfect country. But it is fascinating.

A couple of other quick thoughts: I do recommend checking out the American music scene. There’s a lot to like. Please remember that laws vary state-to-state. What is lawful in Virginia may not be acceptable in Arkansas. Don’t be physically aggressive or unpredictable if contacted by American police. America police can, and almost always will, react decisively and rapidly if they perceive physical aggression against them.
