Cheryl

Hello everyone,

Managing meals day-to-day can sometimes be a real mental challenge, even more so when you land in a new environment, with different schedules, habits or ingredients. How do you manage your meal routine as an expat in Hungary? We invite you to share your experience in order to help fellow expats and soon-to-be expats.

What are the main changes you have made to your meal routine since settling in Hungary?

Did you face any challenges to adapt to new meal habits?

Do you cook fresh meals everyday or do you meal prep? Why?

If you live with your family, do you prepare meals for everyone for school or work? Are canteens available?

Do you usually eat out for lunch or dinner or do you prefer eating at home?

What surprised you the most about meals in Hungary, either in terms of habits, timing, portions, meal composition, food culture, etc.?

Share your insights, experience and meal routines!

Thank you for your contribution.

As a tourist we always ate out, 2 times a day.

Living in Hungary with a full kitchen we always cook at home; Daily.

Seems half our life is either shopping for groceries or cooking.

We actually dislike eating out.

Better to  eat at home and know exactly what is inside the food.

Last time, about 4 years ago we had a gyro, the guy turned my stomach because he handled the food without washing his hands or using gloves and touched the money and handled change.

Read just a week or so go about 500 people having food poisoning, mostly school children; 47 children went to hospital.

Can not take chances with your health unless you have a cast iron stomach and good immune system.

How do you manage your meal routine as an expat in Hungary?

I'm vegetarian mostly but when I visit the uk most times I will eat salmon or chip shop fish. I don't travel backwards and forwards as much as I did years ago.

When I helped out at a language school I tried many more Hungarian dishes at lunchtime and in the evenings and some of the dishes were lovely but with others I was suspicious that they contained animal fats.

What are the main changes you have made to your meal routine since settling in Hungary?

I've just got older and have time on my hands so choose to mainly cook for my friends, visitors and for my family.

Did you face any challenges to adapt to new meal habits?

Hungarian food is either well cooked and well known Hungarian,  Italian, Indian or Asian dishes OR any of the same junk food and bar food outlets that we get in the UK.

I cook fresh meals everyday and also cook extra veggie type winter foods because it can be eaten later in the week. But in summer I eat more salad.

We prefer eating at home. And eat out more on holiday.

Let,s see.

I am roasting a young duck in the oven in a clay pot, baked potatoes to go with;Side of Hungarian style red cabbage fresh made with an added apple and a huge pot of  veggie soup. Just your average Monday meal.

A bit tired as I had to run across town by 8 am and get a CT scan with contrast dye injected into my arm;

Felt weak, tired and a bit dizzy after the dye injection but after walking all over the great hall market and finding the duck I was fine.

Probably will crash out early tonight.

I refuse to eat junk food and most in restaurants is on the junky side one way or the other.

Got my blood work results, WBC is better then ever and I feel great.

If one eats processed foods all the time their health would crash after any sort of illness.

I enjoy cooking, never thought it was interesting until the last few years.

Amazing how the body can repair itself with the proper foods and limits on some items.

A couple at the poultry vendor purchased a huge whole goose, head and all.

I think it is a bit early for a Xmas goose but then again they may have a special way of treating it beforehand?

I know my cousins in Poland had a smoke house and had a simple chicken smoking for weeks before we arrived. It was very nice.

This makes no sense....

People who eat fish and no other animal products are called, Pescetarian.

I was one for over 30 years. Well not a true on since adding the poultry.

Slowly added poultry after about 15 years but not daily.

IDK, one day out of the blue I could not stop thinking about having a simple piece of fried steak covered in garlic.

It was driving me nuts like I needed a fix!

Gave in a couple weeks later and never looked back!

I like it, although most of our diet in well over 60 percent veggie and some whole grains, we have a bit of flesh almost everyday now.

I recently looked into diets on what blood type a person has;

I am O Neg. Was told in the past I was double Negative whatever that meant.

We O neg,s are suppose to eat meat protein , like cave people!
