Does anyone know of any companies in KL taking on highly qualified British flat roofers? Many thanks,

Hello barclay116,

Welcome to Expat.com 😀

You might want to start by contacting roofing or construction companies directly in Kuala Lumpur to see if they have any openings.

Posting your detailed CV in the job in Kuala Lumpur section could help you get in touch with companies or individuals looking for your skills.

Good luck!

You'd be lucky, pay will be low and from my experience in how they did my neighbours roof, quality may be different.

Wish I had one here in Indonesia. My contractor built our house but he really sucks at waterproofing the flat roof. However, getting an expert won't cost much since that kind of labour work is cheap in Indonesia. It's the same in Malaysia. Also, I've done lots of renovations and even hired contractors for condominium buildings and there are no western workers. They are in most cases local Chinese contractors who commonly use Indonesian workers for the manual work. Sorry but I don't think you have any chance of doing that kind of work in Malaysia.

From what I see, the developers use cheap labour and materials, do the bare minimum to save costs. Each of the homes in my area leaked. All the ground floor tiles had to be lifted as they were not laid properly .most of the windows and frames were replaced due to sctratches. Terrible cracks appeared outside the house. You really need to be good at doing your own maintenance.

Several of my neighbours paid the same contractor RM9k to get there flat roof painted and he only did one coat of paint.

I paid rm300 for 20ltrs paint , took me about 2hrs to do the whole area.

You'd better listen to what expats and locals who have lived and worked in Malaysia have advised rather than waste your time and effort applying for something that will never happen. Sorry to be so blunt but your chances of being able to do that kind of work in Malaysia is incredibly slim. The labour costs are very low in Malaysia and companies that do this kind of work only employ locals who are paid local salaries which would be very low for this kind of work, or they employ foreign workers such as Indonesians who earn even less. Also realise that so many buildings in Malaysia have flat roofs so your skill is not something hard to find.
