Jakarta Police chief Insp. Gen. Unggung Cahyono has ordered his personnel to shoot down violent motorbike robbers—locally known as begal—on sight in the capital.

“There have been seven robbers shot to death in the Jakarta Police jurisdiction to date,” he said after attending a terror case conference at the Bekasi City Police headquarters on Thursday, February 26, 2015.

Seems the police are a little miffed at being attacked by bike thieves, so they're just going to shoot them, maybe some questioning at a police station later, if they live.
I suppose the upshot (yep - just noticed that) for the rest of us is, our cars and bikes are less likely to get stolen.

Ah, I can see their point.

The Jakarta Police will launch daily raids on motorcyclists and repair shops in the Greater Jakarta area, after a string of violent robberies and hijackings targeting riders throughout the past month.

The torching death of a would-be mugger in the outskirts of Jakarta earlier this week has brought growing concerns among Greater Jakarta residents over reports of escalating street crime into the spotlight.

The man was attacked by an angry mob and torched alive after he and three other muggers used a sword to attack a couple riding a motorbike as the gang allegedly attempted to rob the couple of their vehicle.

Jakarta Police Chief Insp. Gen. Unggung Cahyono said on Friday that police had arrested 93 suspects linked to armed hijacking cases across the city over the last few weeks.

The suspects were occasionally armed with homemade firearms and were reportedly not afraid to assault or murder their victims.

Using a sword to attack someone in order to steal their bike - ouch.
I can see why the police shoot them.

Edit - I suspect the thieves will also support this - if the alternative is being torched to death by an angry mob.
Nasty.
