In an era where artificial intelligence poses a growing threat to various professions and disrupts work structure, how does one select a sustainable career? Indeed, we are still far from the time when AI will be capable of teaching or handling all accounting tasks. Nevertheless, an increasing number of individuals considering working abroad, both prospective candidates and current expatriates, are reevaluating their career plans with a fresh perspective.

How to build your career abroad

The impact of COVID-19 remains fresh in everyone's minds and has given a boost to previously dormant plans of moving abroad. However, economic disruptions and the ever-innovating world of artificial intelligence have changed how we prepare for a move abroad, especially when it comes to work. The focus now lies on self-employment, personal growth, and maintaining mental well-being for expatriates when considering their new career plans. But how can one ensure the longevity of their career abroad?

To begin with, we must understand what we mean by "career." By definition, a career implies progression through various stages and the idea of climbing the corporate ladder. While this concept is widely accepted, it may not suit all types of workers. For instance, some expatriates perceive a sustainable career as a means of self-fulfillment rather than reaching top executive positions or becoming CEOs. They find satisfaction in their work without pursuing hierarchical advancements. Others prioritize achieving a healthy work-life balance, while some emphasize the importance of fulfilling their professional missions. There are also those who value a series of diverse experiences.

Certainly, all these definitions are valid, as each individual has their unique career plan. However, how can one be sure that the career they have chosen will not become obsolete? There is no magical solution, but rather strategies that involve entering sectors that demonstrate long-term resilience.

Sustainable careers worldwide

Tech careers

Technology is a rollercoaster ride. Despite layoffs and recruitment, it continues to thrive. Despite a challenging year in 2022 and recent waves of job cuts among industry giants like GAFAM, the global technology sector is still actively hiring. This sector branches out into various fields, with numerous innovations emerging one after another. In 2017, an optimistic study conducted by Dell and the Californian think-tank, the Institute for the Future, estimated that 85% of the top tech positions in 2030 do not yet exist. The study focused on the exponential growth of robotics and artificial intelligence, which would eventually lead to the emergence of "virtual human beings" after 2030.

These statistics continue to be cited today, with passionate experts advising individuals to prioritize doing what they love rather than merely pursuing hierarchical advancements. Instead, pursue fulfilling experiences abroad, meet new people and constantly learn in a world where AI takes care of tasks humans prefer not to handle. However, reality often shatters this idyllic utopia. Whether this is viewed as a negative or positive outcome depends on one's perspective. What is undeniable is that innovation is indeed creating new professions while simultaneously rendering others obsolete in the short or long term. Many future job opportunities are concentrated in the vast tech sector, which spans the globe. Countries are actively competing to attract the best foreign talent. Therefore, working in the tech industry, particularly specializing in cutting-edge fields, can be a strategic choice for those seeking a sustainable career abroad.

Working in sustainable development

The climate crisis is growing more urgent with each passing day. Environmental transformations are compelling professionals to adopt different approaches in various sectors such as construction, transportation, agriculture, agri-food, fashion, and digital industries. Sustainable development impacts every sector, requiring the production of goods using as little energy as possible, the use of products that pollute the least possible, and the promotion of new consumption patterns.

Once again, the challenges are immense, but so are the opportunities for international careers. Numerous countries have presented their future visions, accompanied by new standards for preserving the planet. Examples include the United Arab Emirates' 2030 plan, Japan's 2035 vision, South Korea's 2050 vision, the United States' 2040 strategy, and the European Union's 2050 objectives. While some may view these as mere communication plans, changes are indeed taking place, giving rise to specific professions aimed at creating a greener and more sustainable world.

Some of the key sectors driving the ecological transition include transportation, energy-efficient building renovation, agriculture (mainly organic farming and permaculture), renewable energies, and the circular economy. The circular economy focuses on producing sustainable goods and services that minimize waste and make efficient use of resources.

Working in animation and video games

Life is not just about work; entertainment also plays a crucial role. And the entertainment industry is a vast and thriving business. Human beings are naturally inclined towards contact, interaction, and sharing, even in recreational activities. Video games have become a global phenomenon that brings people together from all corners of the world. This constantly evolving sector has demonstrated resilience in the face of challenges such as the Covid-19 pandemic and economic crises. Today, it generates revenues that rival the powerful film industry, with video games often surpassing box-office hits in terms of earnings.

Countries like the United States, Japan, China, and South Korea stand out as excellent destinations for pursuing a career in the video game industry. France, Canada, the UK, and Germany also boast dynamic video game sectors. Careers in the video game industry encompass a wide range of roles and specialties, including design, programming, visual imaging, game design, marketing, distribution, console construction, publishing, and much more. The opportunities within the industry are diverse and constantly evolving, offering numerous pathways for individuals passionate about video games.

Focusing on sectors with labor shortages

The most pragmatic approach is to consider sectors such as construction, healthcare, digital technology, and transportation, as they are actively recruiting worldwide. Countries like the United States, Australia, Canada, Japan, South Korea, the United Kingdom, Italy, Slovenia, Germany, Croatia, and Finland each have their own strategies to attract and retain foreign talent. For aspiring expatriates, these countries present numerous long-term career opportunities. These essential sectors that experience a shortage of skilled workers will continue to be in demand in the future. Healthcare personnel, for example, are indispensable, and the need for doctors will always exist. Similarly, professions like hairdressers, cooks, plumbers, electricians, and roofers will always be required. In addition to these traditional sectors, there are also exciting and innovative professions, including those in sustainable development.

Ultimately, the right job is the one that aligns with your passion. The success and longevity of a career are greatly influenced by the level of interest and enthusiasm one has for their chosen field. While it's crucial to adapt to market trends and undergo necessary training, it should stem from a personal choice to enter a specific field. This mindset contributes to a fulfilling expatriation experience.
