Is D7 visa right for me?

Hello!

I’ve been looking into ways of getting a residency in Portugal for a few months.

I have a remote job outside of EU/EEA that exceeds Portugal’a minimum wage. I have savings equal to two years of minimum Portugal wage. I will be moving alone.

So, one of the most popular options I found was D7 visa. But after talking to many lawyers in Portugal I’m not sure if my remote job fits D7 passive income requirement, since all the specialists had very different opinions.

Maybe there’s someone, who had similar situation and successfully obtained D7 visa? Or should I consider D2 instead as independent worker? All the taxes, accounting, invoices and social security stuff really freaked me out — too complicated for someone not fluent in Portuguese 😅

Hi,
Please describe your remote work.
The D7 visa is for passive income. If you have this income available in a bank in Portugal, I think you will have no problem. If you also meet all the other requirements, of course. And you can do your remote work as well.

Please read this, it is the same answer concerning D2:

RESIDENCE PERMIT FOR SELF-EMPLOYED WORKERS WITHOUT A RESIDENCE VISA (former D2 Visa)

For D7 the question of profession does not matter at all.

Will he not be eligible for the D7 as being an independent worker?

With a D7 visa, you can be self-employed, a dependent worker, do nothing, etc. The requirements between a D7 and a D2 visa are different.

The D7 visa always requires you to have a passive income, but with it you can work in Portugal or remotely from Portugal to another country.

Johnny   could you please describe in more detail what a D7  visa permits  /  who it is suitable for , or maybe even designed for ?

And can it be obtained from within Portugal once one has arrived as a simple visitor / tourist, or must it be obtained  from outside Portugal ?

Thanks

JohnnyPT

Hi Almirante Reis,

Any visa must be applied in the country where you are living, at the embassies/consulates. As a UK national, you can use your previous visa-free trip to Portugal to prepare all visa requirements, so that when you return to the UK, you have everything ready.
