I would suggest you register with the portuguese medical council first. If your medical degree was from a university accepted by Portuguese medical council then you should be fine. Sometimes there is a reciprocal arrangement so if you were practising in Ireland then the Irish medical council can give you a performance of good standing certificate or similar. You may need to look into language proficiency as well if you would like to work in Portugal. I have looked into it as a dentist from the U.K.
I don't expect any visa requirements as you are already in the EU.
Should be straightforward for you to practice with one of the private medical groups.

I had to stop working at the end of March this year due to musculoskeletal problems.
I think if I wanted to practice in Portugal it would have been difficult due to the language proficiency.
I do think that registration would not have been a problem though.

I had a relatively good run of over 31 years and pretty much accomplished all my goals in the profession.
My wife and I will be leaving the U.K. middle of May. She is an audiologist and she will hopefully explore options for locum positions.

Hi Liam,
You will have to learn Portuguese and learn it pretty quickly to get work here as a doctor and to re accepted by the Portuguese. As you are heading to Lisboa most people there speak English but work wise you will definetly need Portuguese. They are more forgiving in cities like Lisboa and Porto but where I live in northern Portugal I have experienced racism against people who do not speak Portuguese. Trust me as a fellow Irishman, in rural parts the Portuguese do not like outsiders and are never accepted. My Portuguese is rubbish which makes the situation worse. Every week I find some form of racism against me. I have found a handful of really nice welcoming, pleasant locals who have been great but the majority do not want me here.

Wow. Thanks for sharing. Your post was an eye opener. I haven't travelled throughout Portugal but was under the impression that foreigners or English speakers are accepted everywhere in Portugal - as long as we're not too loud, rowdy or binge drinkers.
