I have no firsthand knowledge of motorbikes but assume one needs to have a driver’s license valid for motorbikes, vehicle registration papers and an ID or passport. Same virtually everywhere in the world or?

Unusual. Of course one needs a driver’s license but I never heard of a country where one doesn’t need papers to show the ownership of a vehicle. And unlike in the US, driver’s licenses aren’t used for identification in Germany. One is always required to carry their government photo ID or passport with them whether in a vehicle or not.
