So according to the UK gov website, as a US citizen, I can stay in the UK for up to 6 months without a visa. I'm considering relocating to Edinburgh and living with a friend who is a student at University of Edinburgh. If I go and live with her, how likely is it that I'd be able to find work without a visa? Will people be willing to hire me and pay cash?

Hi and welcome to the Forum.
The short answer is that as a US citizen, you can't work anywhere in the UK without the appropriate visa; if you're caught, then you would be deported and not allowed back in the country.
