Carrying Medicine to Saudi Arabia

Hi All,

I will be soon moving to Riyadh. I have doubt in bringing medicine to Saudi Arabia.I take Clonazepam 0.25 mg tablets for sleeping disorder. Can I take this medicine while travelling to Saudi Arabia with doctors prescription ? If no, is it possible to buy that medicine from Riyadh using a doctor prescription  from India as soon as I reach there ?
Please provide your valuable advice.

Bring the prescription here, go to a doctor and get is prescribed to be bought from here...

Thanks Ali for your reply.

Is it possible to go to a doctor there without getting a Iqama ? Because in the first few days I will be on work visa.

I suggest not to depend on the answers here. You may bring the prescription stamped, attested and translated.
i personally know a case where a family had to go through huge trouble even when prescription was available.

Theoretically, when you are carrying medicines into Saudi, the prescription has to be attested by the Saudi embassy in the home country which means translation and attestation by your ministry of foreign affairs first.  That is the only safe way to bring medicines into the country.  This is the same for other GCC countries as well.

Practically, however, it varies depending on the type and quantity of medicines you are carrying.  If it's not a narcotic / narcotic abuse type of medicine e.g. Tramadol etc, they generally don't care.   It is arbitrary to say the least.   Depends on whether you want to take the risk.

Also, you can buy most drugs from pharmacies without prescriptions - some pharmacies make a fuss but most in my experience, just hand over the medicines.  And yes you can see a doctor but you would have to take your passport as a form of identification with you.

As I said, for safe side, do not carry along the medicine as it may be Schedule X category which may be under the banned list.

Come here, go to a doctor with your passport, discuss with him and mostly he'll prescribe you it from here.

If there's an insurance it'll be cheaper, else you'll need to pay for it. A box costs around 20 SAR

Please suggest me some Indian physicians/ clinics in Riyadh

@Ehtesham is this the case for clonozopam or other medications regular in Saudi also? The family you mention was carrying any medication common overseas but banned in Saudi? Or regular psychiatrist medication?

@Ali_N Is clonozapam available in Saudi with Doctors prescription? Can a general physician give that prescription or we have to go to psychiatrist? Can we see a psychiatrist whenever we need by appointment or is it through referral only?

I doubt that your questions to the people above can be answered as they are not doctors.

The medicine, as far as I am aware, is available in Government hospitals but not private pharmacies.

You can take appointments with psychiatrists directly without the need for any referral.  For prescription medicines, it doesn't matter who prescribes it.  But if the medicine is controlled as this one seems to be, the prescription must be by a specialist in the relevant field.
