Friends needed

Hi,

I've just moved to Budapest to work for a year but I don't know anyone and would really like to make some friends. I don't fancy sitting in on my own every night for the next 12 months! I live in the centre of the city and am 24.

Would be really nice to talk to you expats living out here too.

Like I said before:
How do you socialise at home?
What's your hobby?
I can help you find the Hungarian equivalent, and you are bound to find a lot of english-speakers everywhere.
Especially your age group.

There was a japanese comic convention in Budapest last week FFS, don't tell me your intresets are less likely to be shared by Hungarians!

... and that's besides hooking up with expats.

Hello Alex,

I'm Coralie, french girl in Budapest, I'm not a really good english speaker, but I open for new meet.

If you want it's possible to take a drink the next week. I wait you answer.

Coralie

Hi Both,

Thanks for replying to my post.

I like lots of things, shopping, going to the cinema, cycling, going out on Friday & Saturday night for drinks, in England I did Kickboxing but I'm not looking to take that up here. I am open to most things.

Coralie, yes it would be nice to meet. I know a little French but not enough. What day is good for you?

Splendid list of interests!

I'll pass on shopping though :-)

Non-dubbed cinema screenings are usually marked "feliratos" ("subtitles"). Even better rate of English-speakers there :-)
Here's a program guide:
http://est.hu/film/english_screenings/
Just click on a movie, screenings marked (mb) are dubbed, the rest are not.
So-called "Art Mozi" places encourage discussion and socialisation in their cafes.

Cycling: Tons of clubs: http://bicikli.lap.hu/szervezetek_klubok/14264372

Nights out: While the dictionary lists "kocsma" and "presszo" as "pub", they are actually daytime homeless shelters serving cheap hard liquor. Stick to places titled " Pub" or " cafe". Irish pubs are a blast everywhere :-)

Martial arts help form tight-knit groups, I met my wife at karate training :-) Just drop me a note here if you change your mind and need help finding a nearby dojo.

Good luck, and don't hesitate to ask!

Alex,

If you just want go out for walking, cycling, or running, or even sitting in the green with a book in your hands I recommend Margaret Island.

I like Westend City Centre, there is plenty of restaurants and shops inside it. You can found a big cinema there as well.

There is another shopping mall called Arena Plaza

Mammut is another shopping mall but also a good place for a Saturday night.

Have fun over there.

Attila

There's a great support thread for lonely expats within this website:

Hi everybody,

I'm Julien. I'm in the same situation. I've just moved to Budapest for 6 months to work and I don't know anybody. The evening and the week end start to be long. I'm looking for people to do something more interesting than to stay at home.

Julien

First of May tomorrow is a traditional blue-collar / family holiday, you're supposed to hang out on Margaret Island (Margit Sziget) with a balloon, drink beer and eat weenies (small soft boiled sausage-looking things made in a factory) and listen to distorted popular music.

Have fun!
:-)

Hi guys,

maybe it's time to organize the first Expat.com meeting in Budapest ? ;)

Sounds good to me!!!

Hi Guys!

the forum with advice on how to make friends is great!
therefore I suggest meeting today 1.05.2010 late afternoon (4pm) on Margaret Island.

Paulina

Hi, I will be on Margarit Island anyway, just heading there now. Was a bit confused with where to meet though. My translater online says it's Margarit bridge but I didn't understand the last bit. I guess I will look for the Hula Hoop!

it's on the bridge at the trawmay stop (I have never been there so cannot give you better direction, sorry:)

see you soon!

paulina

Sorry, didn't get your reply in time, had already left. Didn't see anyone with a hula hoop though. It was manic getting on and off the island!!

We should try to organise a bit further ahead, and somewhere/sometime less crowded :-)

Hey Alex,

I'm living in Budapest for the next month and would like to meet some people my age to go out and hang.  I'm a photographer so I really want to get involved with the community and gain an understanding of the city...I figured the best way to do that would be to meet people who live here.

Let me know if you want to go out for a drink or something sometime!

Best,
Ashley

Hello! I am Lili, I am from Mexico.

I arrived to Budapest 2 months ago and I would like to know new people. I would like to have friends here, I guess its so much better than to be at home bored and sometimes sad and homesick hehe.

See you!:)

Hello abd good evening to all ..
Currently living in London and thinking abuot moving over next year ..
Curious as to whether or not you guys socialise a lot ??
Where do you go ??
What are you all into ??
Robin

Hi Robin.
Well I certainly like to socialise a lot so it's just a case of getting youself a group of friends. You can do pretty much everything you would do at home here.
You should come out for a wknd and see if you like it. More than happy to show you around a little bit.
Alex

Maybe some new expats or locals that want to have one more friend? If so - just send me a note and we will try to solve it :)

That's great, Philippe, but do you speak at least English so I could understand you? :)

yes excuse me
Hello I am philippe and I have just arrived to Budapest, I have just created my company there and I shall like meeting and being made friend, in brief buddies who whatever is the age, ya not of age to make the fiesta and have fun.
If you want to contact me with pleasure

Hi friends,

I am looking for somebody who can help develop my english oral knowledge. Of course I will teach you in hungarian language.
I am 30 years old, I live in Budapest

I like travelling, playing football, parties etc.
if you would like to know our capital or country i will show you and we can improve our language knowledge.

You can also try the Language Exchange group of CouchSurfing:
http://www.couchsurfing.org/group.html?gid=29733

I'm often at a loss whether to post cross-links between ExpatBlog and CouchSurfing. I think the primary target audience is different: I don't suppose many people here arrived in their country of current temporal via hitchhiking :-)

mods?

just spoke to Julien, it's ok ;)

Thanks!

All I can offer in return is mentioning the ExpatBlog on CS when people ask about long-term arrangements.

Hi Guys,

I am Italian and I am moving to Budapest for work at the end of next week. I am completely new to Budapest (I have never been there) and I do not know anybody there (apart from my supervisor!). Please let me know if you organize any social event together.

Also, anyone doing yoga in Budapest? I heard about an ASRAM Jóga és Meditációs Központ, Budapest, do you know it?

Hope to meet you soon in Budapest,

Valeria

Welcome! Hope you will like it here!

Hi Valeria,

Expect to find fliers for yoga classes (spelled jóga) somewhere near your home!
Excellent way to get to know people.
