I will be staying in Malta from the beginning of August to the beginning of January. While there I will be student teaching at one of the schools in Malta. I have been trying to find a place to stay in but I'm not sure what is the most reliable source to go through (remax, frank salt, simon mamo). Also, I know that a long let is considered to be 6 months and longer. As I will only be there for 5, I'm not sure what to do because I cannot afford the double cost of rent. Should I claim to stay for 6 months and leave early and pay the deposit fee? Are there other things I need to prepare before coming (other than finding a living place)? Any suggestions of where to live if the school is located in Mgarr? I feel a little lost on this and I am running out of time so any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Hi Courtney,

welcome to the forum.

Are you talking about Mgarr in Malta or Mgarr in Gozo? Mgarr Malta is a small village away from most of the Expat life so you would probably find cheaper rentals there but you could also look at any of the villages being serviced by the 225 bus to Golden Bay (Mosta,Naxxar,SanGwann) which stops near Mgarr.

I saw that you are American. Who is dealing with the neccessary paper work, permits and so on ? They should be helping you with the formalities as your stay is longer than the 3 months allowed with a Schengen visa as a tourist.

The beginning of August is still the holiday season but as you are staying until January you could be lucky and find something officially for 5 months instead of the usual 6. It will be a matter of negotiation.

Cheers
Ricky
