Please Read: Teaching You English

At least twice a week, I get emails from our Saudi members on this forum (usually male) asking me to help them with their English.

I want you to consider this: teaching English is my job. It's something I am paid to do.  I know you aren't suggesting paid tutoring since, as a female, it would be impossible in Saudi for me to work with an adult male student.

So what you are asking is that I spend hours of my time helping you with English gratis (via the phone? skype?) out of the goodness of my heart. Don't you think this is a bit much to ask?  I'd be happy to help you out once in a while if you need a letter edited or whatever, but please, no more requests for free tutoring.

Thanks for your understanding.

hehehehe  ya r right...i know exactly how does it feel :D:D:D..  btw i was wondering......
i do nat kno talk inglich...u plece teche I .:D:D:D

inglich ..lol

very funny :P:lol::lol:

Yeah. I kinda know how you feel. You look at jobs like accountants and wonder if they get asked to perform bookkeeping for free. Chefs are not normally invited to cook or teach cooking gratis. For some reason, many people do think we could teach them English as it seems like it's just engaging in conversation. Sometimes I like to converse but if it would involve actual academic chores such as tutoring in grammar or writing then I draw the line. I've had requests from foreign residents about such tasks as editing whole books just because I'm a teacher of English. I half-jokingly tell them that they can not afford my editing bill but it's quite true. Even for offers of paid tutoring, I tell them that they would be better off taking schools courses as I would probably bill them too much. Again, you can say this half jokingly but most people get the serious message - a teacher's time is money too.

Yep, you absolutely get it, alamographics, probably because you're in the same line of work! :)

Now, I often talk to people at my job who aren't students who want to practice their English, and face-to-face chit-chat is fine with me, often very enjoyable with a higher-level speaker.

But good-golly-Miss-Molly!!  When people with minimal skills think you can teach them English in a few hours via telephone ?!?  I don't know about you, but the times I've attempted conversation on Skype with low level English learners I end up feeling frustrated and have to cut the chat short.

Let me say upfront that I very much admire those who are trying to learn and improve themselves and giving credit where it is due, they probably know more English than I know Arabic!  It's just that they need to be realistic about what they're asking.

Despite of all

I am very open to ladies engineering related questions.. :))
But limited with Civil...

Because, I am a Civil Engineer.. means Construction etc.

ummmmm.. what was that? You are offering to teach WOMEN about civil engineering?

aticus is such a generous guy :)

hehehehe

I hope the lurkers gt to read this one.

You could make a lot of money from private tutoring. If the majority of the requests you are getting are from males, well then narrow the criteria down and ask for married males with the supervision of their wives holding a nice big wooden dough roller :D

Scully, never any mention of $$ lol

Sorry, I'm  not an employment specialist.  You need to help yourself by posting your resume online and contacting recruiters who specialize in the Middle East.

Best of luck.
