Looking for expat community

Hi,
the wife and I will be traveling to Mexico to explore a few places with the intention of living there part of the year. We will be there in late Oct. We are retirees with interests particularly in the arts. We know about San Miguel but as I understand it the cost of living there is almost as high as in the states due to the upscale communities. We are looking for another expat community that would be something less "discovered" and still within one days drive to a urban center (Mexico City or Quadalajara for example). Can you shed some light on possibilities or refer us to websites that will be helpful.
