Driving license in Canada

The rules for getting a license vary per province. Ontario has a graduated license system. Every new driver starts with a G1 (similar to a learner's permit in other countries). After taking a road test a year later you can get a G2 which is a license with some restrictions. There is then another waiting period before taking another road test and you get a G license which has no restrictions.

If you come unlicensed from your home country you have to undergo the whole process. If you come with a license from your home country you may be able to trade-in your license for an Ontario license. Which license you get depends on your country of origin and if Canada recognizes driving experience from that country.

1- Your driving experience is not recognized at all and you have to go through the whole process with it wait periods and tests(G1-G2-G)

2- Some of your driving experience is recognized they allow you to write the exam for the G1 and take the road test for the G2 the same day with no wait period.

3- Your driving experience is considered the equivelant of a G2 license and is traded without any test requirements.

4- Your driving experience is considered the equivelant of a full G license and is traded without any test requirements.

You should be aware that Ontario insurance companies do not recognize driving experience outside Canada and the United States which means much higher insurance rates for immigrants getting licenses in the province.
