Convoy/Caravan to Belize from TX?

Post new topic

Jetmon13571

I plan to cross border at Brownsville, TX first week of Nov 2024 and Into Belize at Chetumal, MX. I would like to take the quickest route and get on the road each day by daybreak. I am hoping to cross into Belize at the end of the third day of driving if possible. Prior service military. Safety in numbers.

For safety reasons, I would stay away from Tamaulipas and Nuevo León, and cross at Eagle Pass/Piedras Negras or Del Rio/Ciudad Acuña.

Stay on toll roads. Take your time, and try to enjoy the drive.

A good route would be the #29 from Acuña/#57 from Piedras Negras to Allende where you can get FMM and TIP. Although both are available at either crossing.

From Allende the 57/57D will take you past Saltillo, Matehuala, San Luis Potosí,  Querétaro, all the way to the Arco Norte (bypass of Mexico City).

Leaving the Arco Norte you will merge onto the #150D coming from Mexico City. Follow that past Puebla, Orizaba, Córdoba. Just past Tenaja get on the #145 to Minatitlan. From there it’s the #180 to Villahermosa, then the #186 to the Subteniente Lopez turnoff (border) west of Chetumal.

Typically border brokers don’t work on weekends, in case you are importing your vehicle/contents.

Insurance office just past the border compound might also be closed on weekends.

Remember to cancel your TIP to get your deposit back, before leaving Mexico.

@TexItalian

Hi. Do you drive that trip often. Are there truck stops, taking 5th wheel trailer to plecencia

Brigitte B

@mckanic

There are lots of truck stops/gas stations. Some with good convenience stores and all have bathrooms.

Not assuming, but hoping you will take the central route to avoid Tamaulipas and Nuevo León.

We’ve driven, from Alberta to Belize and back, many times.

Safe travels and enjoy!

mckanic

@Brigitte B

I thought it would be faster going down on east side I worked in Posa Rica but that was in 2008. It seemed safe & highway was new then

laggardly

@Brigitte B

Are there motels you like on this route Brigette ?

Brigitte B

@mckanic

For me, it’d be worth driving a couple hundred kms extra and a few hours longer, for a lesser chance of an incident, especially in Tamaulipas.

Safe travels!

Brigitte B

@laggardly

If you mean along the central route, yes, there are lots of fabulous pet friendly hotels, as we travelled with  our dogs.

I’d be happy to send you the list of the hotels we’ve used on our trips.

laggardly

Yes please

If you have the safe route, (point to point), I would be eternally grateful

I intend to share whatever you provide, being safe having an adventure is paramount

THANKS

Brigitte B

@laggardly

If you scroll up, I posted directions along with toll road/highway numbers.

I’ll send you a message for hotel list.

I was trying to send you a private message, but the system won’t allow it. If you’d like the hotel list, and you’re on Facebook, I could use messenger to get it to you,

No, I do not drive that way often, just helped a friend drive some vehicles down early this year (as transmigrantes)

Yes, there are truck stops down that way. The tolls on highways, I know because we paid a few on the way to Veracruz.

We also paid $20 each vehicle and trailer to the Cartel man, right at the first set of speed bump outside of the Los Indios border crossing. Very polite guy, puts a barcode sticker to your windshield, and you are good to go, no hassle down the road...
