How to check status of NLV application?

We applied for our NLV at the Spanish Consulate in Toronto, which only accepts NLV applications by mail, therefore we did not get an application receipt. However, the website to check application status requires a receipt number. Does that mean there is no way for us to track our application? I tried emailing the consulate but did not get a response.
