Change of Family name based on marriage

We have M Cards (dual-Brit/Canadian) and were maried 42 years ago. Registering our marriage has so far been difficult, lengthy and expensive.   Latest problem which so far we have been unable to resolve. Ixelle Commune wants legal proof that when we married   wife changed family name  to husbands.  We have passports, driving licenses, social security cards in married name, all rejected as proof. Both Canada and UK accept name change on the basis of marriage certificate and request for document in new name and do not have a separate procedure to recognise the name change. Anybody had the same problem and found a solution?
