Basically your SOL. Virtually impossible to retrieve any money. You will only spend more plata on an attorney so cut your losses and move on.

    Hey guys , I have a question.  I was engaged to a Colombian lady. She came her on a marriage visa . During this time I loaned her money to save her mother who recently died's home that had a lien on it. I new the mom and family and agreed to loan her the money. I need a lawyer to help my money back or a lawyer to send her an official letter stating that I am pursuing and attempting to get my money back. Thanks for someone's help. I wish you had done some free online research - and talked to existing expats - before engaging with any Colombiana. Please accept our condolences for the loss of your money. However, consider it a "tuition fee", for learning a basic/fundamental lesson about Colombians: any money you give them isn't a loan, it's a GIFT.

Don't bother with a lawyer, that's just gonna be more expense for nothing.

I have had mixed results with "loans" to my Colombian family. My first personal rule is don't loan more than you can afford to lose. My second rule is to state very clearly what the terms are. When and how much I expect to be paid in return. Third I don't make it too easy on the borrower. When sister in law "needed" a new washing machine; I sent a down payment and she made a loan in her name. I sent the payments monthly and so she had to pick up the money that I sent and then go pay the loan that she had taken out in her own name. All that said my wife and I have been "taken" twice. Once my wife purchased a number of item and shipped them to Colombia for her niece to resell. When the time to repay came she spent the money on a once in a lifetime deal on a moto that she had to have to do her job. It was for a total of about five hundred dollars. The second was when a nephew asked me for about 50 mil pesos until next payday. That said they have  been cut off from the bank...lol.
