Hoping to get married and live in Colombia

Trying to help

I came to Colombia May of 25 to visit and to meet up with a lady I had been chatting with for several months prior.  I spent 8 nights, in beautiful Colombia, with my beautiful lady.  I spent 3 nights in Medellin, 2 nights in Pereira where my lady lives, and 3 nights in Cartagena.  I had a great time and returned just a few weeks ago.

I spent 11 nights, again with my beautiful lady, now my fiance, and her family.  We visited Covenas, as well as Santa Marta, and once again I had an awesome time.

I am hoping to marry her and live in Colombia.  I am a mental health therapist and can work from anywhere, which makes things seem to come together.

My only concern is I have a criminal record from many years ago, 1987, and I'm worried this may prevent all of this from happening.

You maybe   in.luck

The cancilleria doesnt ask for police record in thiere  requisitos  for a Conyuge visa.

But they could ask for it anyway , after you apply  but unlikely,as they know it is a big deal getting an FBi police report and getting it apostilled.

But you never know.

They are getting strict with marraige visas lately. Only being with someone 21days might not cut it. Better keep all photos  corresponce airline tickets etc.

Why someone would take the risk  to.marry someone they have been withh for such a short time  whether its "love at first site"orj ust to get a visa is beyond  me, but to each his own.

You were WAY kinder and optimistic in your response than I would have been, but then again we need different types of advice to balance things out 😄

Buddy, the ancient mark on your FBI report might be the least of your concerns. I highly recommend you search for these terms on Google and YouTube (especially the latter):

"Colombia romance scam"

"Colombia dating women"

"Colombia matchmaking scam"

"middle-age dating in Colombia"

Do your research, talk to other foreigners (in person or via video) within your/our age group, to find out about their experiences. I won't say anything specific here about Colombian women, because other threads have covered this topic extensively. Point is, whatever you do, please be FULLY informed. Unfortunately - I learned the hard way - few people (like me) are gonna volunteer money-saving or potentially life-saving tips when it comes to dating/marriage... you'll have to seek out similar stories yourself.

Final piece of advice: For certain things in life, it's [almost] always better and less expensive/risky to RENT than buy. Hopefully you understand what I mean. And hopefully you don't find this out the hard way...

Good luck!

If it floats flies or....

bicimontaña

You should contact a lawyer in the state where the conviction is recorded to file for an expungement.  If successful legally the conviction never occurred and you can then file to have it removed from your FBI report.

Best of luck with the new relationship.

I heard that it's basically impossible to remove ANYTHING from your FBI report. Not unless you're insanely wealthy (and therefore have political contacts who can make the right calls to "let" you remove something from your FBI report)...

@Trying to help

First of all, does your lady and her family know about this criminal record?

@teacherincolombia36

She is well aware of what happened.  It was some drug related charges and we have talked about it several times.

I am working on getting a pardon.
