Cultural manners in Mexico

jazzpaz

I almost lost the opportunity to buy a house here by asking the seller to make a few

improvements prior to sale. Where l am from this is almost always requested and agreed to by the seller. I didn't realize it is considered an insult here!

Now I am more cautious.

My house has a driveway that accommodates my small car snugly. Before I got the car l allowed a neighbor (who has three cars but nowhere to park them) to block my space.

Now I must look for him (or a family member) and ask that they move their car(s) each time I leave or return in mine. This seems not to inconvenience them, but it drives me crazy!

I have three no parking signs in front of my house but this family is the only one that routinely ignores them.

What should I do?

You gave the neighbor permission to park there, so the signs don't pertain to them. To be a good neighbor, you might want to continue to allow this [I would], as it is helping them and you may need THEIR help some day. Since they move their car when you ask, is it really a problem ? Remember, this is Mexico, where people tend to be more neighborly and helpful, and also in less of a hurry. If it really bothers you, of course you have the right to ask them to stop, but you will have to tell them in person . Good luck. They may not understand why you changed your mind.
