Major appliances

jazzpaz

Is it true that Mexican appliances are uniformly of poor quality? I need to replace my stove (for a smaller one with a broiler) and refrigerator.

I have been advised to import these from the U.S. but isn't that difficult? What would you do?

It is  not hard to import your household appliances. As a permanent resident, you can import your entire household one time, but you may be past the time frame allowed,[ in which case, don't do it because of the import fees]. We did this with no problem, but, we left the fridge behind, so we bought a cheap Mabe brand fridge here. It lasted only 3 years, with repairs, so we replaced it with a Samsung, which is made in China, and a much better fridge. I suggest for major appliances that you buy Samsung, LG, Maytag, or comparable. Our fridge, front loader washing machine, and TVs are all Chinese brands readily available in Mexico [none of this stuff is made in the US, so no reason to import from US] , high end with long warranties. They cost more than the Mexican brands, but are cheaper in the long run, since they last. As for a stove with broiler ........ good luck. Mexicans use gas stoves and no broilers . You can find electric stoves and ovens, but not easily. We use a traditional gas stove, and a large toaster oven for baking and broiling. Toaster ovens are reasonably priced on Amazon, with a good selection and good brands. Happy shopping!

Thank you, famouskate100! You must get tired of all my questions, but I always benefit from your insights. I guess I'll have to get a separate broiler.

Hi Jazzpazz. I don't get tired of your questions. I wish I had known this stuff when I moved here, that would have saved me a lot of grief and money, but, live and learn, right? You're right, it would be easiest to buy a separate broiler, I suggest a large convection toaster oven, which you can also use for baking and air frying. They are expensive in stores, but considerably cheaper on Mexican  Amazon. You can make an account, or ask a Mexican friend to order for you with their account.

Thanks. I see a convection oven in my future.n

Mabe has upgraded its product lines over the years.  We have owned homes in Mexico for 20 years.  The older models were frankly quite bad especially for baking as they did not have thermostats or very good insulation.  We redid a kitchen a few years ago and the newer Mabe stove has both insulation and a thermostat.  You need to ask the retailer what models are available....find the most "fancy" retailer you can, including Liverpool.  The smaller mom and pop stores won't have the better models in stock.
