Your thoughts on healthcare in Mexico

I think it depends on where you live and your personal situation. Public healthcare can be helpful for basic needs, while private insurance may offer faster access to some services. I prefer having insurance for unexpected costs and using public healthcare when it is available.

I pay cash, although I feel I should try to get insurance for "catastrophic" coverage. Routine, preventive care is pretty affordable in general. I live in Saltillo, Coahuila, and I pay $450 MXN ($26 USD) for a visit with my primary care, $900 MXN ($52 USD) for a skin check with a dermatologist, and $450 MXN for a visit to the chiropractor. Although Saltillo doesn't seem to have a large expat population, it's pretty easy to find providers who speak English if needed.

I have not yet accessed the public health system, although I've heard positive things about it overall -- the only negative being wait times in certain areas.

My husband and I are in our 50s and are in generally good health (I have high blood pressure that's under control, and that's about it between the two of us), so I personally feel that insurance is unnecessary in terms of preventive care and the occasional cold, but again will probably look into some coverage for hospitalizations.

We/I have used public health care system called IMSS for a long time.

We/I also use a company in Merida called Health Itinerary which helps us with appointment by taking us there and translating from Spanish to English. A lot of Doctors speak English but they do not know the correct medical term in English,

We/I have paid out of pocket for a few things like a colonoscopy and eye care.

We/I have been satisfied with our coverage.
