Buying a car in Mexico: Sudden price increase

jazzpaz

Is this okay? I moved to Saltillo Coahuila from Houston Texas in July. I'm so happy here! I hope to live here until I die.

Now there is a family emergency in my hometown and I must return ASAP. I went to the Toyota dealership in Saltillo to buy a new Toyota Corolla to drive back in. On Saturday l was quoted $22,000 USD for a new Corolla.  I intended to pay cash by wire, but my Houston bank was closed so I was instructed to return Monday. When I did the dealer told me to wire $25,000 to them, so I did. Then I was required to pay more than 7,000 pesos (cash) for licenses and registration. I handed it over. Now the dealership says there was a mistake and I must pay more than $500 USD to complete the sale.

Does this make sense? In the meantime my mother's dying in Houston and wants to see me.

Jazzpazz, I am sorry for your experience. There are people who will exploit you, and this may not be the only time. We all have crazy stories. Sadly, this happens a lot in Mexico, and this is why I suggested you use an attorney you trust, to buy a car. I love Mexico, this is my home, but I have learned the hard way and I am much wiser, more careful and less trusting. See if you can get your money back, as $2500 USD is too much to lose, and from your story, you are being robbed. Don't permit this. You will probably need an attorney to threaten them in order to recover your money. You are close to the US, you can bus to your mother and arrive the same day. The luxury buses are wonderfully comfortable, and cheaper and safer than driving. Oh, and shop around for insurance ! Prices vary greatly. With help from my attorney, I got excellent coverage for my new [to me] Audi for 1/3 of the price of others, and it's a highly rated company .

I should have taken your initial advice to hire a lawyer. I will next time I buy anything, even street food!
