Managing mailboxes or PO boxes in Mexico

Cheryl

Hello everyone,

Something as simple as receiving mail can become a whole new experience when you settle in Mexico as an expat. Mailing management can indeed be different from what you are used to. In order to help other expats and soon-to-be expats, we invite you to share your insights.

How do you receive mail in Mexico? Do you have a traditional mailbox, a PO Box, or another system?

How was it to set it up and what are the formalities?

Is the postal service reliable and secure?

How do you handle missed deliveries or forwarding your mail?

Do you have any tips you would like to share to newcomers and fellow expats?

Share your insights and experience.

Thank you for your contribution.

Cheryl, thank you for this! I've been living in Saltillo, Coahuila for 3 months. I have an easily access mail box, but I have never received any mail in it.

I'm looking forward to the advice of fellow immigrants.

When we first moved to Mexico we had set up a virtual mailbox through Travelingmailbox and it worked very well.  They scan envelopes as they arrive at their address and then open and scan the contents of any that you mark to be opened.  They even deposit any cheques received per your instructions .. all at a cost of course.  Then we found in our area there is a mail service whereby they receive mail at their address in the US and physically bring it down to their shop here for you to pick up .. you can either rent a mailbox in their shop or just let your mail go into the general mailbox, which is a cheaper option at only 50 pesos per item if you hardly get any mail.

Hi Cheryl,

We've been living in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, for 4 years. The mail in Mexico is unreliable at best. If you need to get something mailed to you from another country, then FedEx or DHL are your best options. But, for a long-term solution, I def suggest a mail forwarding company. There are quite a few companies with loads of different options depending on your needs.

When we were leaving the US, I did loads of research and wrote this sandinmycurls.com/best-mail-forwarding-service/ hope it helps.
