After 15 years with a 21" TV, my dad has decided to upgrade with a 60" smart telly. The daft bugger called me yesterday to ask me have I heard of a soundbar? TVs these days just don't have the volume that they use to have.

TV ? What is that? Have not had a TV for nearly 20 years.

Everything I watch is online. :)

Sorry for the PITH post. Could not resist..... Mea Culpa.

I've got several TVs but one of them I've never watched - I used it as a monitor but the kids now use it as a monitor and a TV. Another TV is in the bedroom but never gets switched on. I've disconnected it now.  I might use it as a monitor.

We've got Netflix access here (it's my eldest daughter's and she can share with 4 other persons concurrently). It's wildly popular with the kids as it's multi-lingual and on demand.

As I speak, I'm VPN'd to the UK and downloading the latest BBC stuff I like from the UK.   The world of TV has changed. Broadcast TV looks pretty dead to me as a technology. I've actually thought about cancelling the cable TV because we only really use the phone and Internet.

I never used to watch tv here in HU for years on end. Lately once in awhile I will watch  a few programs with my hubby but most are murder investigations and far too real for my nerves.
I had US Netflix for years here too, let it go recently and hardly miss it.
U Tube has so many things to offer that I bartely scratch the surface of what they offer.
Been watching some, "Danger" tv from the UK. love real stores and real events.

I know that feeling of loss - having lost my mother last year.  Just the idea of  "ooh...that's interesting, I'll give her a cal or write her an e-maill" but alas no more of that.

My eldest brother died 5 years ago (time flies) and to be honest I was much more upset about him.  He was quite young and I'm approaching the age he departed this life.  Miss him a lot as he was the big brother and the leader of the kids' troop.

My mother on the other hand could be quite tough, even harsh sometimes but she did her best and she was of course our Mum.  I felt really bad for her at the end as she know she wasn't long for the world.  But nothing we or they could do - dodgy ticker.

One should really try and talk to the previous generation and get them to share their experiences. Younger people or kids don't do that but if they did, they'd really benefit from it down the line.  You have to be much older to know the value.

My Dad is really with it but it takes ages to get him to share and talk.  What he does like is reminiscing about his earlier life out in the Pacific after the war.  I'll see him soon so I'll get him going.  I really should record him.  The kids have recorded him for school projects but his experience and knowledge could be really useful in some sort of oral history library.

Yes,You should record everything tid bit you can while you still can.
My mother and i had a special relationship, fought like cats and dogs when I was a teenager but as soon as I became a mom/mum too we got on great.
I used to be the only child that really enjoyed watching her do her household work while she shared stories about the past.
I know more about our family history the all the other sibs do.
I know, I also miss my sister more then my parents.
She was really one of a kind and way ahead of her time.
She probably would love cell phones, she used to be on my mom's lindline phone all the time when she was over visiting her.
One boyfriend or the other was calling my mom's number up.
She loved  learning about computers in the primative state, she passed, well not even sure, in 1991 or 92 just 2 years after our mom did almost to the day.
Passed on Elvis Perselys BD, not sure what it is with BD's and death.
Someone close to me is always kickin' it on someone's BD.
I say no more BD's so no more death!
My mom too was tough on us children. Sometimes to the point where it was embarrassing to have my good friends even find out how odd she was.
One embarrassing time it was my 16th BD and we had a house party with boys. My mom was strict but opened up some red wine for herself and was getting too strict. Everytime a couple would slow dance my mom would come into the room and  pull them for at least one foot apart. WTH, how embarrassing at 16 to have one's mom pull people apart while they danced.
I never had another party after that, in fact I hardly ever invited anyone over after that "party".
She meant well but it was weird.

I'm thinking of having a wake for the UK's EU membership.

There's of passing going on "Elvis has left the building"...."UK has left the EU...."....."Brother/Sister has left this plane of existence..."

I never actually voted locally.  At least you got in under the wire.  I have no idea what will happen come 1st Feb but  I suspect the sun will still come up. It has done on other days of the usual FUBAR scenarios dreamt up by politicians and the evil ignorant electorate.

I will be away on the fateful night - I leave the EU as an EU citizen on Wednesday and return some time later as a non-EU citizen.   I shall be in the non-EU queue along with the hordes.

I cannot remember exactly where I heard it - perhaps from my Ukranian ethnic HU neighbour - who said that some great- relative  of his had about 5 or 6 nationalities/passports during their life time as all the borders kept shifting.   It's just geo-politics. We can only hope Trump gets the boot so someone altogether more reasonable gets to discuss trade.

I don't care much these days for Confucius and his interesting times.

Unfortunately I will be a large number of thousands of km away on the day.   I shall get up and have my hotel breakfast and stare into my coffee and ruminate over the times we had together before the divorce.

In a way, Mrs Fluffy, myself and my Fluffyettes are all products of the EU.  We've all taken advantage of the "flat" surface the EU offered us.   I suppose it lives on in the Fluffyettes.

Even more radical that a Weather Fish.

Might be a scam.

They are spoofing SMS/text messages these days.  They want you to click on the link so you end up on their fake provider web site.  It's quite sophisticated for a scam.

I got called on my UK number for some nonsense about cleaning the outside of my house.  I don't have a house in the UK.  My Dad got the same and he lives in sheltered accommodation.  My sister got a mobile "update your details" SMS and was almost scammed.  Luckily she called her bank (not the number in the SMS) and was able to find out it was a scam.   It's a horrible crime and can ruin people's lives. People like my Dad are very vulnerable.  It's radical thinking but I'm leaning towards  some test executions for the scammers.   Not my normal liberal thinking of rehabilitation.

I have unlimited Data on my UK mobile number (Vodafone) but it's been throttled back to 25GB a month and post-Brexit, I expect I will stop using it completely as they won't allow you to use your tariff for roaming.

Nah not a scam its just junk SMS from Drei. I've had the same number from when I first moved over and I was on Pay as you Go. It's now a contract number. So most probably dates back to that in their system. It was originally Orange, but Drei bought them out.

Then Drei bought our house provider (tele2) so the system is messed up lol.

On another note A1 the mobile provider of Telecom Austria has now dished out 5G. Contracts €90 - €65 a month. Sod that, I am just fine with my 4G its fast enough for me and I only pay €20 am month.

My provider is offering this :o

We still have no cell phone, have a very old style phone which has a pre-paid amount on it.
3,000 Forints worth lasts us 6 months to a year!
We bought a new 3 G I-Phone when it was new but never set it up for use! The battery has since exploded on it's own and we have not tried to fix it yet, maybe by the time 6 G is up and running we may get around to fixing our 3 G I Phone!
We are so behind the times, don't care about it much I suppose.
Back in the mid 90's on the Island of Hawaii we bought a very pricey battery operated style cell phone. Came in a huge bag with a huge battery pack.
A small phone would not work with all the hills and valleys I traveled on to work on the other side of the Island.
I still use audio tapes to hear my music with!
One day we should transfer everything onto a stick and make more room around here for more junk.
You may want to get yourself a HU perm resident card now after Feb. 1 so you can enter HU without having to get into the 3 rd world line at security.
Speaking of phones, makes me think about something I thought was super funny back in the 80's.
My sister worked in downtown LA, Ca. in several offices, was surrounded by,"big shots" driving their limo's with a driver or driving themselves in a Lincoln or some other huge American luxury car.
They had built in cell phones in their cars for big deals and such.
My sister would often stop at a light next to one of these cars and the person would seem to love to show off to the world that they were so powerful that they were speaking on a phone in their car. Well she was not about to be shown up. She carried a rotary phone in her beat up VW bug and would pretend to talk to someone on her landline phone! She said the expression on the faces of these people was something to see. She was "weird" but a ton of fun too.

That's terribly expensive.  We have a provider in our village doing this:

Digi Hungary

If you look down the bottom, it says:

1000/300 Mbit/s le- és feltöltési sebesség

300/75 Mbit/s garantált le- és feltöltési
sebesség

Hűség nélküli ár 3100 Ft/hó

So that's about 9 EUR a month for 1GBps best effort!  It's direct fibre.  As I sit at my desk, I can see the box outside on the phone pole.  I don't know the conditions - might be a special offer.

We get our Internet elsewhere though - through the cable TV company (no Telekom here) - and we pay about 30 EUR a month for 200 TV channels (almost none watchable), landline and Internet (120 mbps/10 mbps).  You can imagine, we're thinking of changing for the 1Gbps.

When I lived in Austria, I was disgusted by Telekom's offer - we had 4GB a month.  It was pathetic and utterly protectionist and like a big anchor for anyone in business.  I don't know why they ever thought there was any chance that would last.  We also had a line for a fax machine. They really weren't happy when we cancelled that line. I only received about 1 or 2 faxes a YEAR.  It was about 15 years ago.  But who sends faxes these days?!

What will stay the same?

EU citizens arriving in the UK, and UK citizens arriving in the EU, will enjoy the same freedom of movement rights.

The UK will still be part of existing EU trade deals but will able to negotiate future trade deals.

The UK would remain in the customs union and single market so it would be subject to EU regulations

Security co-operation will continue between the UK and EU

The UK will still be subject to EU law and the rulings of the European Court of Justice

It will also effectively stay part of the Common Fisheries Policy

Not according to the UK government web site.

It says:

Border control:

you may have to show your return ticket and money

At border control, you may need to:

show a return or onward ticket
show you have enough money for your stay

use separate lanes from EU, EEA and Swiss citizens when queueing

My interpretation is that it doesn't matter if you have a card or not, you still have to go in with the third country nationals at passports.

If you have the card, maybe they don't need to show the first two items and perhaps not at all during the transition period. No-one really knows for sure. Maybe someone with a card can say.

There will always be some Jobsworth at the border who will try and stick the boot in and be unaware of the transition period.  I am sure they are going to have a blitz on the border to hassle UK citizens just to flex some EU muscle.

When I cross to Austria in my HU car, we just get waved at.  When we used to go in a UK registered car, they always stopped us looking for cigarettes and perfume. That's even after the Austria's accession. Germans were also doing that for a bit before it clearly was a waste of time.

The security theatre usually going on at the Austrian border with Hungary now is just such BS. Any smuggler isn't going that particular way.   They can just walk across at quite a few places.

We should carry this on in the Brexit implications thread.

Lekker, lekker coffee.

The Irish PM is facing a General Election on 8 Feb; anything he says between now and then is to try and get re-elected.  If there's no agreement and a hard border appears between Ireland and the UK, then they've just potentially lost 60% of their market place; he wants his electorate to believe there will be a long negotiation where nothing changes.

Didn't know about the election in Ireland.

I'm not in favour of the EU in some of it's goings on, notably what I perceive as a lack of transparency and accountability.  If it drags on then I'm more in favour of it so there's some common ground in lack of progress. I am sure BoJo doesn't believe it'll be done by year end either.  Despite what he says.

I do have to continually remind myself that every time I see a Politicians's lips move, they are probably lying; it doesn't matter which branch of politics, the ability to lie convincingly is deemed as the most desirable attribute to have.

I suppose if you travel a lot then those passport control lines could get on your last nerve when you're already jet lagged.
I dislike air travel so much that I usually say let's put off some trip or the other until later...

Can't tell you how many talks I had with myself before taking a long haul to the uS and back.
The worst passport control was when we were entering Hungary back in 1978.
We were the only passengers in the car on the train from Austria into Hungary.
Had 2 armed guards watching us the entire ride in.
Had 3 days to visit the police station and show them our passports and register where we would be staying.
Machine guns used to be everywhere in Hungary then, now the police don't even carry.
One reason our son didn't come to visit us for the holidays was he shares my dislike for travel.
I never bothered to try out my HU perm resident card to enter HU after leaving the EU and re entering.
Not  sure if that would be enough for passport control.
The lines for 3rd country visitors wasn't so long so I just went that way showing my US passport.
One time however years ago my husband and son entered through the HU citizen line while I was stuck with the tourists in the 3rd world entery line. They both laughed at me, well revenge is sweet, they had to wait for me just the same.

I met an actor once and asked if it would be possible to act through interrogation about a major crime or in court or to fool at lie detector machine.  The actor was quite sure that it would not be possible.

Yet politicians seem to be able to spin it so at least some people believe. I suppose creating reasonable doubt is good as innocence in some judicial systems.

But they say there are "tells" which can be indicators of lying.

I was watching Isabela dos Santos (ex-President of Angola's daughter) being interviewed by the BBC over corruption allegations.  She was quite adept at dodging questions in a political way but she averted her gaze on one very specific question. It looked dodgy to me but apparently that's not a tell you can use.  And we couldn't see her iris dilation.

I guess what I'm getting to is that politicians must be adept at lying and performing.  They must believe what they are saying but perhaps it's a momentary state of being rather than true conviction.

All politicans are first actors.
We all know about Ronnie Regan , Pres. Trump and Gov. Schwarzenegger ( had to look up the spelling on that one!) all being actors first.
I have known many good liars in my past and it's hard to know they are lying if you do not operate from that way of living.
You can't always tell by them not looking you in the eye or then looking too hard into your eyes, fidgeting when speaking or playing with an object while talking.
My sister used to tell big ones to our mother all the time and I would look at her in wonder and ask myself why she was lying, we had nothing to hide, or at least I didn't.
I think many in politics have been through some sort of training with an alphabet agency before hitting the "world stage" All actors and liars.

Yes, I think you are right.  Many are them are also lawyers. That'll make for good "liars" (or at least spinning tales) in trials.

I was laughing at the legal argument of the Dershowitz Doctrine in what seems to look like is now the King Donny trial.   Unbelievable!  Surely that was why the American colonies broke off from the UK - absolute power corrupts absolutely.   King Donny could do whatever he wants if he thought it in the best interest of the country.

Dershowitz looks like he's grasping at straws. I cannot believe he could possibly believe what he said.  Or he's got some mental problem that is incapacitating his logic. Bonkers.

I hope Bolton gets called - that'll be interesting.  To be asked questions in the Senate when the WH has tried to stop it.   He'll have to answer if he's under oath regardless presumably of any WH opinion on his book material as classified.  I don't like Bolton as I think he's a warmonger but whatever.

I'm throughly enjoying the spectacle and the resulting Schadenfreude on Donny Boy.

Yes, I was going to mention most all are also lawyers, professional liars and cheaters.
My sister's boyfriend however was a personal injury lawyer in S. Ca. and he was a really nice guy, guess once in awhile a decent person gets into that line of ,"work".
They met when he was handling a case for her, a big no-no to date a client but that goes with the cheating part I suppose...

Oh well, maybe the BF was moved by what was heard in these cases. I don't think it's such a bad thing dating the clients.  I mean, if they are all adults and not vulnerable in same way, who really cares?

True enough, he was a great guy and he wanted to get married to my sis but she never wanted to get married again.
They lived together for a few years, later I heard he sent his next GF to law school, my sister could of done that if she wasn't so flip.
I will never forget his name as all one has to do is think of a famous brand of whiskey and either pick the red or black label, very catchy name for a lawyer unforgettable.
In fact my sister knew his new GF as she worked in the law office. My sister said she was a nice lady.
Must of been since she agreed with her husband my sister's ex to help pay for part of my sister's funeral expenses.
I'm not sure how many women would go for their husband's paying for another women's funeral. Her 2 other nice boyfriends paid the other 2/3rd of the costs.
She was crazy, met many nice men who really cared for her but she loved her freedom more then anything or anyone.

Wow, that it is an unusual name.  I don't think I've heard of anyone called Mr Famous Grouse or was it Mr Canadian Club?  Hmmmm....maybe my thinking is off.

I suppose paying to send someone off who meant something shows there was something there. It was nice of him.

Someone might find this useful as sent to me by my American colleague who clearly needs me to get with the programme:

It seems your "friend" is more west coast then east coast.
