Interesting I've arrived at a major tourist and noodles hot spot and there's not much going on.  Plenty of face mask wearers and also plenty going au naturale. Lots on hand sanitising going on as well.  But no-one checked me at the airport.  And no-one seems bothered too much.   Plane was very empty.

Why the panic over TP?  I'd have thought fresh water, batteries, cooking gas and just food were more important.

I think I'd reach for the book of DT's speeches before resorting to newspaper.

My boy wasn't in a panic over TP he was just surprised how easy it is to get people over excited. He thought they were ,"smarter" then average over there.
Yesterday , think it was the 16th district , we jumped into Lldl to check out a non food item on sale.
In the parking lot a middle aged women next to use was unloading her large shopping cart.
Either she is a wedding planner or a jerk who is part of the promblem.
Her cart was loaded to the top with 1 kilo bags of white rice, some bags of flour and sugar too but mostly rice.
My husband said she is stocking up because of upcoming price hikes or a shortage. This is exactly why they used to ration foods because some people go whole hog and over buy which causes others to panic.
Ok, I admit after the TP story I made my husband buy a super size of TP just in case...I didn't buy out the shelve though.
Good you were able to come home without too much troubles. Always nice to fly on a light flight so you can relax and stretch out.

Oh, no I'm not back yet, still far away in strange land.  Maybe the woman in Lidl was planning on making saki and pancakes.  I believe Australia is also in panic mode. TV pictures shows all the shelves empty. Bonkers!

Sighs... Yes, had that problem yesterday when went shopping. Good grief. People panic. Over what? A Facebook page? A Youtube video? A WhatsApp post? Good grief.

Even my wife said I should go shopping as there may be a run on dry dog food.

Well, guess what... Plenty of dry dog food at Aldi. But no tissues. Or pasta. Or flour. But plenty of other goodies. Vegetables were there (and veggies are very important but they are not cheap). So it seems to me to be more a poor person (and thus probably under-educated, prone to conspiracy theory) panic.... That was my impression.

Dry dog food doesn't taste that good.  In fact it doesn't seem to taste of anything to me.  We've tried it.  We had different types of dog biscuits with different colours and they tasted all the same. That's fakery on the financiers (owners) rather than the consumers (the dogs).  OK I concede it might taste and look like something to dogs though.

Some people are just susceptible to manipulation.  Others far less so.   So much fake news around, it's getting out of control.  What ever happened to checking multiple sources?   Irresponsible "journalism".

Mrs Fluffy says that they'll over ordering pasta next time and then there will be a glut and it'll be on special offer.  It's hard not to get swept up in the hysteria.

My real worry are supply chains for spare parts for all kinds of gear but particularly hi-tech stuff.  Content on some gear is 70%+ made in China.   Planning now has started to include a 3-4 months schedule on what used to be a 2 week delivery period!  Started at 6 weeks but now is morphing into months and months.  This could mess up everything from car headlight bulbs to motors for your dentist's chair...

Went to the great market hall today just to buy our normal amount of peppers. Not busy even for a rainy day and there was produce everywhere.
I did notice here and there some prices have gotten a bit hight=er, was that way at Tesco and Lidl too.
People are over reacting.

Yup, totally over reacting.

They really want to be more concerned about how dependent we all are now on Chinese made goods "critical" for our modern day to day lives.    China is now on the critical path.  So other places where one might get stuff are likely to have higher costs - i.e. inflation for everyone.

Luckily low tech veggies are not coming from China unless it's Pak Choi but even then unlikely!

Not looking for a gold star but for years we have been saying between ourselves that it isn't a good idea to get so much from just one country.
All those old factories in Hungary used to produce almost everything the people needed even exported things as they was a surplus.
My husband worked on Cespel as a student/worker for 4 years then was a qualified machinist by age 18 and working 6 days a week doing piece work. Not true that in the commie days people didn't work hard,He did piece work which means he was paid per piece and not by the hour so he had to know his stuff .
That place had trains coming and going, it was a city within itself.
Raw materials would enter and finished work was sent out.
Sewing machines trains, buses, motorbike, bicycles all were 100% made in Hungary.
We went to the Island a couple years back for a look around.
All closed down, broken window with rusty rails, train tracks pulled out, very sad..I wonder if it is too late to start again, doesn't anyone even know how to make a screw by hand?
What am I talking about, most people can't screw in a light bulb!

Yes, you're right but I think the old Commie way of doing stuff was pretty bad.  Those days are long gone.  I looked at the economics of a couple of businesses in Hungary some years ago and they hadn't got a chance against modern Western operations.  The most ridiculous thing was being set export targets and fulfilling them but all the output piling up in foreign countries unsold.  You can imagine the party hierarchy patting each other on the back on their success of meeting their export quota but the sales force in whichever country having to discount the products because these foreign warehouses were full up.  Basically the Hungarians were subsidising foreign businesses while the factory managers and higher ups were oblivious to that there was no money was coming in.   They had done their bit and they forgot (and had no interest) about what happened further down the line.

What they could do is just build new modern automated factories if any.  They did this for a bit in the later 90s but nearly all of those 10 year tax holiday businesses are long gone.  It's just cheaper to do it in China and that's the bottom line.   It's everywhere and even in the street - very noticeable that Ikarus Buses has gone and appearance of the King Long buses in Budapest.   Heavy manufacturing looks quite declined to me in most European countries - only speciality, hi-tech and services will be left.  Quite a risk that skills will be lost and no capability in a crisis.

One doesn't put one's eggs in one basket as you said.

For,"fun" my husband was watching a U tube site on machining. Some people were trying to show how to make a screw on a lathe.
My husband was both laughing and almost crying... He said when the do-do hits the fan we are in big trouble. These U tubbers did everything backwards and wrong and the part wasn't perfect.
My husband used to work withing 10,000th of a hair tolerance on military parts... Oh well, even he has lost his stuff these days.
He was even able to set up a Bridgeport mill for me to run, me? I don't know anything more then stop and go on a mill machine. He set the dials and all so I just had to stop the machine when the little thingy hit the other little thingy... Just being silly but that's about my skill level with machining.

I think that works on so many levels.

Unfortunately You Tube brings out the worst in some self-promoting experts. I don't really get the whole idea on how people as "influencers" can make money out of that stuff and even be a personality in it.  Who cares what they think about something?

I think it's easy to fall out of favour though - not noticing when your thingy has hit your wotsit and not doing anything about it.

There's something to be said for handcrafting but humans aren't always able to perform at 100%.  Robots make the same thing each day without getting tired, never sleeping, no bathroom or snack breaks and never complaining.  But when things go wrong, they'll need a human to sort it out.   So that's one supervising human with pay per 30 machines. Or something like that.

My husband always worked by doing piece work, even in the US. He was fast and almost always did a perfect job.
Not easy, he usually only worked 6 hours a day because it was too much on his brain .
He worked on some space age materials that cost more then a new car per part so it was a bit stressful if you happen to make a slight mistake.
Not all machining is that accurate or needs to be, he usually did proto type work and then they would do it all on a CNC ,
Sometimes it was short runs of maybe 20 or so pieces, not worth setting up a CNC for such a small amount of parts.
He did mention once that he loved doing more useful things like the time a back surgeon came in and asked him to customize  a back brace for him. Sadly it usually doesn't pay well to do nice things... war pays sad to say.He did make many aircraft parts for commerical planes in New Mexico and sometimes train parts but the big bucks was in militrary parts.
I could never do that sort of high stress job for long, doing cards was fun to me,that was my level of stress, all i could stand.
You're right though, my husband often worked 6 hours without a break, he never felt tired because his mind was working. He was forever bringing home his uneaten lunch. no time to stop what he was doing at work to eat.
With dealing cards I knew when my hour was up without looking at my watch, my bordem let me know when time was up.
Sometimes we only worked 40 mins and got a 20 min break and sometimes we even worked 20 and had a 20 min break.
But normal was 1 hour on 20 mins off.
Made the day fly by.

Read they have 2 "virus" cases now in Hungary. 2 Iranian students who just came back from Iran. So the games begin....
Yesterday while walking on Rottenbiller a fat young women passed us and she was wearing a mask.
Just looked so lame.
My husband said why do all the ugly people want to live so badly? I said if she loves life so much then she should lay off the fries.
Those will do her in long before the flu will.
I am only going to put on a mask if I ever plan to rob a bank, that's it.
Wore one in the house in Vegas when I got ill from swimming and the wind got me last year. I hate wearing those, can't get any air and feel closed in.

That's the difference between an artisan/craftsman and a technician.   The CNC machines do what they are told - blame the computer.  If you look at Rolls Royces, much in those cars is hand made and that's why it's expensive but will last forever.  On the other hand, 2nd hand Rollers can be quite cheap.

That's the problem when you're on a roll.  You don't want to stop!   But we're all human and sometimes you just have to have a break.  If you don't rest, it leads to mistakes.

The face mask panic sounds like claustrophobia. Ever been diving or snorkelling?

I think you're being rather disingenuous over the chubby woman.  The woman might have some other health condition. If she was on steroids, they'd make her bloat up.  I've seen people on serious levels of steroids (to combat inflammation) and they look like exaggerated Pillsbury Doughboys.

I've got a mask but it's for filtering out noxious fumes from painting or whatever.  It looks like an old fashioned gas mask but without the goggley bit.   I think it won't do anything anyway - they say greater transmission risk in touching stuff other people handled then putting hands near mouth or eyes.  They've said it can lay around on surfaces for days or weeks.   Longer term I wonder how long this is going on before it burns out.  The numbers are getting more serious - over 3000 dead worldwide.   It's still hardly anything - 150K people die each day worldwide and 7500 die each day in the USA (one every 12 seconds) and about 14 an hour in Hungary.

It's all too late and inevitable.  It's here to stay for a while and it's just something that's going to be amongst us for years.  All the border controls etc will do nothing.

I know we are sort of anti-fatty, not PC really.
I must work on being kinder... even if it is a struggle at times when I see how people treat each other.
Getting old and seen it all, not going to take it any more...

Actually if one is ill then stay away from everyone else, please.
My sister was on steroids for her asthma, she blew up to 140 lbs and wanted to kill herself for being so big. I hate to admit it but I too would rather die then be fat. Seriously I'd be miserable.
It was her face mostly and arms, just had a puffy look about her, like she ate too many salty chips.
40 some cases now of the virus in Hungary.
15 Japanese tourists in the hospital, a holiday they will never forget.
With the 2 students from Iran, one of their girlfriends is now ill too.
I'd hate to be the landlord of whatever flat they are renting.
Not going to be a great way to advertise the place later on. Unless they sandblast the entire building.
I wonder how crazy this can get? What if they decide to quarantine everyone living in the house? Not cool.

Hello,
Is there a procedure set by the Hungarian government on how to deal with the Cotona virus?
We usually split our times between the UK and Hungary.
We are not sure what yo do this year.
Any help would be appreciated.

I've only heard of 3 cases in Hungary, saying that there are 47 cases in Austria.

As of this morning (Saturday) early BUD time, there are 4 cases - it's going to increase significantly no matter what they do to try to contain it.  It's really out of the bag now.

Steroids are bad for increasing someone's weight.  Chronic diseases are like that, they nibble away at your life.  It's almost death by a thousand cuts dragged out over time. In one way it's interesting that people's bodies fight to live even under the most adverse circumstances.

The main problem I can see coming is not  the virus itself but the knock on effects in the economy.  I just read Lufthansa will cancel half it's flight schedule due to falling demand.  I travel a lot and it's going to totally mess up my activities.   And who is going to pay for all that deep cleaning and what about loss of income?  Will insurance pay out?  What happens if you should cancel?

(Might be if the government issues advice not to travel in the middle of a trip, then insurance will pay out - who knows for sure, all in the wording).

There's a picture of quarantine in some place supposedly in Hungary showing everyone in a large room on hospital beds altogether.  That doesn't seem sensible.  I couldn't find that picture again but there's a video showing goings on elsewhere.

Marilyn Tassy

I am afraid travel prices will go up after this has passed. It will pass.
Read yesterday some guy from Holland went to the GP in Hungary and was told he had the virus.
She told him to wait while she called to have him picked up to go to hospital.
He ran away. She called the police and they are out looking for him.
No update yet.

I sort of feel for the poor guy, he paniced about being locked up.
Total medical martial law.
he should of stay indoors and not gone out.
I will write my bro who works for the airlines to see if he has any insider tips or not.Any he is willing to share at least.

Well, they have said here, in the UK and in the USA, if you think you have got it or been in contact with someone that has it, go home and call the doctor or helpline if the country has one. Don't go to the hospital. Wait for instructions.

Sorry to say it but Twinkies are probably one of the worst excuses for a "food" in the world.  This also goes for Hershey bars.  Terrible.  Gold standard is Milk Choc Digestive Biscuits and Galaxy milk chocolate (if not available, Milka acceptable).

TBH, I can see why the guy made a run for it.  He won't want to be locked up and be another Typhoid Mary or perhaps in this case a Virus Viktor or Coronavirus Cornelius.

I have since heard this "escape" was tired of waiting for his pick up to hospital so he left the doctor's office and took himself over.
Sounds sort of off to me, good excuse once he was "caputered".
Guess Italy, the N. part is in lock down today...
I find it a bit strange that those Japanese tourists in Hungary just happened to be staying at the hotel, Mercury Karona....
It is a wonder there was only 15 and not 33 of them.

On a FB page here in Hungary a room mate/friend of a young student here was saying he has been missing now for 6 days.
He went out alone at 9 pm on Monday and hasn't been seen or heard from since.
She posted his photo, looks like a nice straight sort of studious person who wouldn't be in some den getting high for days or something else  nefarious.
She has contacted the police.
I mentioned this to my husband yesterday after she even posted on regualr FB with his details and photo.
Hubby said something that is upsetting to hear if even half could be true.
He said since this student is dark , think he is from India, that some Gypsies may of grabbed him.
Took him to some remote village where he can pass if seen as just another Gyspy in town. They are forcing him to work around their place and that other Gypsies would never ever turn one of their own in if they knew he was captive. He is being used as a slave.
I pray this is over blown and not true.
I hope the HU police can really do a good job and find him soon.

Marilyn Tassy

Noticed on FB now this missing young man is officially a Missing Person.
He is from Pakisztan and if I remember right he is in his 3rd year of uni here in Hungary. 28 years old.
Reminds me some of my old school friend's wives in-law that went missing last year in S. Ca. never found him, only his car out in the middle of a mountain road.
Wonder if it is time to offer a reward? I hope he hasn't been harmed here. I have no idea how good the HU police are at cracking these sorts of cases.
I would assume they have looked into any strange activity with his ATM card or credit cards.
I am thinking of him, not sure how I would handle this if it were my son gone missing, my God what a shame.
Wrote my brother to see if he has any insight into travel restricitons that may be coming and or staying.
Not sure if he is privy to anything much but worth a try to find out.
We were sort of thinking of going to SE Asia this fall but won't be making any plans yet....

It's easy to go missing in many countries but not really in Hungary.  So many CCTV cameras, people and towns around.  Bound to be noticed.

I was in a rainforest recently and you can be 100m from a road and never see it.  Everywhere looks the same and it's hard to see any features which distinguish it from any other place.  If you were wearing camouflage clothing,  searchers might walk straight past you.  And if there for a couple of weeks and died, you'd be eaten by animals or insects pretty quickly and your remains would be spread out over a large area within a few weeks.  In other words, not like Hungary.

The missing guy could have just had enough and left the country via another route - took a bus to Vienna and flown out of there or is visiting a friend in Germany or whatever.

Marilyn Tassy

That would be great if he had enough of HU but from the post by his friend he was happy enough here and finishing up his degree.
You may remember my post long ago about my old boss in Hawaii having her friend go missing. A local HI guy wearing his clothing and driving his car around the Island. No one ever went to jail even though after many weekend searches they finally found his bones tossed off a cliff.
I am starting to think like my husband , he was grabbed at night by a few rough neck Gypsies and is now feeding goats out in some remote village or , no not even going to go there, could be worst.
They need to post a reward and or contact the HU media and show his face all over the place.
I also mentioned not long ago about my old party friend who's wives in-law went missing in the hills in S. Ca and they only found his car...
We often just think of missing children or women but men going missing too.
My husband said because he is of a darker skin tone he can blend in with other people in some remote villages and no one is willing to sell out their own even if they know he is captive.
He told me of many stories of people being held so that others can collect their SS money, get them hooked on drugs or whatever and be happy with a bed and a fix.
Makes me think of human sacrifice or bondage.
My father's cousin was held as a slave for 5 or 6 years by the Germans in Poland, forced to work on a farm during the great war.
Blows my mind but it happens even these days.
I am keeping this poor guy in my prayers until we know more.

I have more sad news... My BFF, Lisa is dying.
I found out yesterday when I got a message from her niece.
I spoke to her last night and it is just a matter of deciding when to ,"pull the plug".
I am so sad , some of the worst news ever.
We have been friends for over 50 years, never ever had even one disagreement or hassle between us, a real  gem  of a friend.
She had signs of the flu last week and this past Wed. her husband finally talked her into seeing a doctor.
Her kindneys have shut down, putting stress on her liver and lungs. She has been intubated and can't speak.
This happened so suddenly it is hard to believe.
Her husband is ill with prostate cancer, we thought he was not long for this world but to have this happen to her is just too much to take.
Her niece and her boyfriend have flown to Ca. to help out, after Lisa's husband decides when to let her go, the boyfriend will stay with him long term and have his family take turns to help him until his time comes too.
So dam depressing.
I am 100% sure it was the stress of years of court dates when Lisa's 2 older brothers sued her over their mother's estate.
Then right after that her husband fell ill.
Not sure why I am sharing this news with strangers but I feel if  I keep it inside I'll snap.
I am praying hard but afriad it may be too late for prayers of recovery.

Oh dear, sorry to hear about that.  Not much you can say.  It sounds like she really got it bad and no time to get her affairs in order.  Don't know if that's a good way to go or not. Bit of a irrelevant point, the end is there one way or another regardless.  It's the living one needs to worry about.

Today was the day mother passed, 1 year ago.    I still feel like she could be sitting at home, just chatting with my Dad or she's away on a trip somewhere with someone.

There's a lot of death around at least in the news at the moment what with the virus etc.   It'll be the dominant story for months.    But I always think all other things that are still going on.  World hasn't stopped turning.  In the big scheme of things, the virus is just a blip if you haven't got it and you're not involved directly.

Nothing here but it'll come soon enough.  We're expecting schools to close.

I'm actually more worried this is an excuse for suspension of human rights by the HU government and possible takeover of Budapest city council by the national government.

Budapest is considered a stepping stone to winning a national election. With emergency legislation, they could use it to destroy the opposition and remove the threat in the next election.

The government has already stopped celebrations on the 15th March, 1848 Revolution Day which would have been an opportunity for opposition protests.   The opposition consented to the cancellation on coronavirus grounds but they could be out manoeuvred if the government passes emergency legislation.   There are hardly any cases here so it seems disproportionate.

The EU will do nothing to stop it.

No news yet from my friend's niece so I am guessing they are just too upset to write or they are hanging in there and hoping she recovers.
I know her, she would hate to be "plugged in" for long. Oh well, she had a good run and some good times.

Yes, I too think it is going to be some sort of reset happen.
No more paper money, all digital, maybe schools will close forever and children will be on the internet for classes.
I wonder what will happen to people who may lose their jobs because of these shut downs, bills never stop coming in job or no job.

I had wanted to visit the dentist but am putting it off, what a job now to have your hands in everyone's mouth, breathing into your face, no thanks, I'll just keep away from drinks that are too hot or cold for now.
Sorry about your mom and the one year "  anniversary" of her passing.
It's been a long time since my mom checked out but we still miss her, never really gets easy.

The dentist issue is one for me as well. I was due there next week.  Better cancel that.

You're right about the jobs. The impact is going to be a serious issue.  Governments elsewhere are saying people can have payment holidays from say mortgages but it's no good because it's just increasing people's debts.  It's not going to be a free lunch.

Airlines are going to be stuffed - well and truly.  I was planning to travel next week for family reasons but I'll have to decide if I go or not.  I got a work related e-mail saying avoid travel.   Don't mind that for a few weeks or even a month.

Apparently today they will decide if the schools will be closed in HU and if they do, they'll probably be shut until early April (that's my guess based on other countries).

If I were you, maybe if it was to visit your father, then I may weigh my options. It is important to see him. Then again there is always skype.
I wonder what on earth some people who have been over doing their credit cards are going to do in a few weeks if this doesn't get better.
I am not afraid for myself at all but no one really wishes to see others suffer with fear, debt or worst, at least not a normal person .
If this is fake then this is beyond insane and if it is for real then why is everyone acting so lack about being in public? I am confused a bit.
If I were a single old lady living alone or a single mother this media hype would make me go crazy right  now.
Makes me think of when the commies in Cuba were going to nuke the US in the 1960's and my mom almost bought into it and was going to give us sleeping tables and turn on the gas before they hurt us! I will remember that when I pray, don't want to hear about anyone going off their rocks over this virus stuff.
It is actually criminal if this is really not as serious as they are leading us to believe.
I'm good, got all  my TP in stock....Yes, I sort of bought into the hype only because I do not wish to fight over a roll of TP in the future. I mean have you ever been to a Macy's half price sale?...
I've already experienced using the old newspapers as a child when my mom was waiting for her paycheck to arrive... Not very elegant.
Went to Aldi today, my husband wouldn't go in but I ventured in alone, all good until it was time to check out and the clerk coughed without covering her mouth in front of me, dang what is wrong with people?
I have read about those Iranian students being held in quarantine. They are going off the rails, throwing chairs and wanting better treatment. Welcome to NH in Hungary!
They are lucky they got to keep their cell phones and not get stripped down to the bare min. and tied to the bed.
I know when my dog was in quarantine in Hawaii he was not allowed to even set one foot outside his run or it was going to be a fine and his 4 months stay would restart from day zero. We could book a time and day to wash him but it meant arriving 2hours before visiting time and checking out and not being able to just stay put. I drove to visit him 6 days a week for over one hour each way for 4 long months time, don't even ask me how Honolulu is, I have no idea but I know how to drive to the other side of the Island  and sit in a dog run all day long.... I would wash him inside his run with a hose rather then driving so far and having to leave right away. I used to wash him almost daily as they place was not too clean and many ticks were everywhere. I had to sit and pick ticks out of his flesh daily , rub the spots with alcohol and use a special wash on him. i would report the ticks all the time, all they did was move him to another run near another infected dog.. Don't trust the system at all.
Not fun but hey, rules be rules.
Seems like a return of the black plague.
Some people never got ill and others , well you know the story.

Hungary: Authorities implement nationwide State of Emergency amid coronavirus outbreak

As of 11 March 2020 authorities have implemented a nationwide State of Emergency amid the ongoing global coronavirus outbreak. Officials have banned large gatherings, limiting indoor events to less than 100 participants and outdoor events to less than 500 participants. Strict border controls have been implemented at the country's borders with Austria and Slovenia, and travel bans have been put in place to China, Iran, Italy and South Korea. Additional travel and business disruptions are possible in the near term and may be implemented with little warning.

Travelers are advised to monitor local media for updates and follow all directives of local authorities.

Sighs...

Politicians at work.... Or rather politicians not at work, just evoking edicts as if that will counteract ignorance..... But wanting to demonstrate they are "doing something", Even if "something" is maybe useless in the real world.

For example..... if one infected person at an event or a gathering of 499 people, coughing and hacking, the virus can still spread by up to almost a three fold order of magnitude.... Not trivial.....

Politicians at work - isn't that an oxymoron?

But sure, I also doubt even the basic restrictions are going to be effective.   UK is working to slow the rate of infection but not contain it.  Seems different to say Italy.

Waking up this morning, I wonder if the world has truly gone mad after this news item:

Coronavirus: Trump suspends travel from Europe to US

I think we need some DT reality check on the EU being a source of the virus in the USA.   Very odd the UK (and Ireland I guess) is exempt but that's probably because of his personal property interests there.  I believe his Payroll Tax moves are to do with his hotel chain - media says that anyway.

I asked one of my US colleagues what he thought and he said he didn't trust Donny to tell him the time.

We haven't got to a discussion yet about how reform of US healthcare would be affected post-Coronavirus - i.e. mandatory vaccinations to get the herd immunity levels up.  And who covers the costs. Arguably the USA is the most connected place and restrictions on movements would be resisted by the population - not like China.  I can imagine armed militias resisting the Feds. Might be some interesting TV shows coming out of this next year.

I'm thinking they're going to accept in the interim a 2% death rate as just the cost of existing on Planet Earth and worldwide transmission as just the cost of "doing business" until the vaccine is ready.
