This is the classic rental scam that I know from other countries (where they ask for a pre-payment to receive the keys - and of course you neither get keys, apartment or money back).
But this is very rare in Germany, because it is uncommon to pay anything before the move-in day (so such a request will set off alarm bells!) and it is impossible to rent a place without visiting it and personally meeting the landlord first.

Apart from the excellent advice in post #4, you'd have to be crazy to rent a place without taking a look around it first.
