) I did not mean to make it sound like buying is a simple option since it obviously doesn't come into question for most new arrivals or people only staying a few years. Thus my tips only concern a small number of long term expats. The point was more that the rental situation can be so difficult that one might eventually look to this option. Even with a good job, foreigners can have trouble getting a good rental but there are no barriers to buying if one can finance it. Buying distressed property is a sophisticated undertaking and needs a good knowledge of the market and location. I just thought it should be mentioned in light of cost of living and the fact that property is so expensive in Germany.
