Women’s health and support systems in France

Hello everyone,

Living in France often means navigating a new healthcare system and social norms, particularly around women’s health. From finding the right medical support to understanding what’s openly discussed or not, experiences can vary widely.

We would love to hear how things work in France, what’s been easy or challenging, and what you wish you’d known sooner:

How easy is it to find dedicated medical support for women’s health in France: gynecology, pregnancy and childbirth, menopause, mental health, reproductive health, etc.?

Are there support groups, communities, or informal networks for expat women in your area?

How are women’s health topics perceived locally? Are people open to discussing them, or do you notice taboos or stigma?

What services, professionals, organizations, or resources have been the most helpful to you?

What surprised you the most in how women’s health issues are treated, talked about, or prioritized in France?

Share your insights to help fellow expats and soon-to-be expats.

Thanks,

Cheryl

Very pertinent article! As a woman the healthcare in France always impressed me with the availability of doctors, the reimbursements, the rapidity of test results. My whole pregnancy period was smoothly taken in charge and I felt very well surrounded by my obgyn and midwives. But years down the line I hit menopause...It was very hard for me to find a solid, open support system and ended up turning to forums in the UK and USA. This also became a turning point of me becoming very informed about menopause and actually ended up helping other women! This was about 8 years ago and since I have noticed more groups/associations run by women regarding menopause here in France. I followed a training last year to be a coach specifically for women regarding life changes (including menopause). But honestly, France is a blessing regarding medical care.
