Dépassement d'honoraires

Hi everybody!
I'm from Moldova, I live in Paris since Feb this year. Getting to know life in France at the moment..
I had a question I thought you (senior) guys could help me answer : what exactly is this "dépassement d'honoraires" some doctors talk about? Does it exist in any other country? (I lived in UK before but social security was quite satisfying there).

Hi!
Basic medical costs are the same for all doctors.This is the amount you get back from the Sécurité Sociale. Doctors who are practices "dépassement d'honoraires" are doctors that charges higher fees.It might be because they have a very good reputaion,work in private clinics,rich neighbourghoods etc.If you go to these,the "Securité Sociale" covers the basic cost.The rest might be covered by you mutuelle-or not..
Most of the time,it is easy finding a doctor who is "conventionné".This means he/she only charges basic cost.I hope this made things a little more clear.
