How does a mutuelle cover works

After all these years I am still unclear as to the extent of my health cover and exactly how it works. I have a mutuelle policy for which I pay €160 per month. This is intended to cover 100% of costs in each catagory, hospital, dentistry etc. which together with state cover appears to be comprehensive. Recently I have had a dental prostheses costing close to €2000 of which I have had to pay close to €900. It is a relief to be able to participate in such a swift and efficient health service and to receive excellent care in every respect but I would be very grateful if a knowlegeable contributor could shed light on its financial ramifications.

@Ralphish The rules and types of coverage will vary depending on the company through whom you have your mutuelle as well the tier of coverage. With my mutuelle, some dental expenses need to be pre-approved prior to receiving dental care (like prostheses) and may also depend upon whether your particular dental provider is on the approved list of providers; the same is also often true with optical. If you purchased your policy through a broker, he/she would be able to walk you through it.
