Great question, I also wonder is Wi-Fi readily available?

When I am in the UK, I use a laptop and dongle.  The network I use is '3'.  For £15.99 per month, I get 5gb of downloads.  The contract can be cancelled with a months notice.  Otherwise, Sky, BT and Virgin are probably the best known for an installed broadband service.  Packages vary and often include a phone line and TV channels.

Wifi is widely available, especially in shopping malls, cafes etc.  I can usually pick up a network on the high street.

Mobile networks:  I use Lebara, as I call overseas a lot and they are much cheaper for overseas calls than the better known networks, such as O2, Orange, Vodafone, 3,  etc.   I use pay as you go and top up online.  Its is also free to call another Lebara user, in the UK.  Stores that are not affiliated to a network, such as Carphone Warehouse are a good place to start for price/service comparison.  They also sell unlocked phones, unlike the networks own shops.

For long distance calls, Skpe is good and free/very low cost.   There are many pre-paid phone cards on sale in the UK, but the call quality is often poor and they rarely seem to give you the number of minutes that they claim.

Orange are total rubbish in London. I curse the day I got my iPhone with them. O2 and vodaphone are the best for coverage. Avoid three like the plague as poor coverage also
