Differences between salaries in London and outside London

Hi all,
in my quest to relocate elsewhere in Europe, I have been dealing for some positions in London area. For my skills, seniority and job title, in general, the salary range was 75k. Now I got a serious opportunity for a position outside London. It is based in Burgess Hill area. They said that the salary for the area is definitely lower compared to London area and proposed a figure around 55k/year.

So, is the equation 75k in London = 55k in Burgess Hill correct?

Can 55k be considered a good salary for a couple? (my boyfriend will try to find a job in the area, but, initially, I'll have to pay for both)

Last question, I see that houses in the area are not so really cheap..what can be a good small town in the surrounding? (I know that going far reduce rent cost and raise transportation cost, but in generally I prefer to commute a little bit and stay in small town/quiet area)

That sounds about right, you always get higher wage when working in London, as the cost of living is higher.

This will give you an idea of the houses for rent in the area.

Assuming you mean Burgess Hill in Sussex (there is one in NW London as well).

Things to consider:

Assuming you don't have a UK bank account (so some kind of credit rating), you will find it hard to get a mortgage, so you'll probably be renting for the first couple of years until you build up a credit rating enough to get a mortgage to buy anything. Rental prices for a 3-bedroom apartment in London varies from £2k > £3k p/month, further south in Sussex £1.2k > £1.4k; these are generally furnished, but don't include gas/electric/water etc. You may get cheaper if you look around.

As for your salary; you haven't said what the job is and your responsibilities, so it's hard to say; safe to say that they'll pay the least they can get away with. Unemployment in the UK is low, so they may struggle to get someone, or maybe not. Up here in Yorkshire, £55k is a very good salary, down south - maybe not so good.

Thanks. Well my idea ia to rent. I need to verify better, for the moment I just took a quick look to some websites for 2 bedrooms houses.
The job is IT architect. I am roughly sure that for London 75k £ is good salary for this position. In addition to 55k there is yearly bonus and some benefits.

For credit rating I perfectly understand. Initially it is enough to open an account and get a credit card. For the future we'll see.
