Be sure to read contract details carefully. Usually there is minimum period (6-12 months) for cheaper monthly fee or free setup. But then you are stuck with that for that time.

And one more advice: when you have picked your candidate, make a good google search with words like "bad service" "horrible" and with the name of the provider. You will then figure out if the provider is any good after all...

To be fair though pepez, I am sure people have had bad experiences with every provider. No provider will have a completely clean slate!

If you also are looking for tv then Sky does a good tv, broadband and phone package. Go to www.moneysupermarket.com for ideas or www.confused.com. They are both comparison websites. I use BT for our phone, they have a REALLY cheap international calling rate to the USA (our bill is always about 25 pounds) and Virgin for our broadband (17.99 pounds per month). I'm sure we could get away with something cheaper but we're lazy. LOL Remember you will always have to pay BT for the line rental because they own the phone lines!!!

BT owns the phone lines, so yes you will need to get into contact with them to set up an account for you.

Then you can select an ISP to set up the internet connection.

Make sure you keep checking with both the companies to check that they haven't cancelled your order without contacting you.

I ended up going with Tiscali. The package we selected had free line rental and free weeekend calls to the UK overseas for a decent price. Always handy for an expat! Good luck

Try not to go for SKY as the service is really slow. I've got a friend who tried getting them to install both sky tv and sky broadband four months ago.... cable tv was installed after a month and she's still waiting for broadband installation till date. She's stuck with Sky now (because of cable tv) without access to broadband.

I'm with BT, which is fuss free and cost me around 25 quid per month.

Our relocation agent (http://SterlingRelocation.co.uk) recommended SimplifyDigital (http://www.simplifydigital.co.uk), which is a "Consumer Reports"-like service that recommends package deals based on your desired features and location.  It recommended Tiscali for us (http://www.tiscali.co.uk), which is the same service we had (and worked well) in our temporary flat, but the previous tenants in our house used Sky (http://www.sky.com/portal/site/skycom/skyproducts) with reportedly good results.

My impression is that a combo TV + broadband + telephone package tends to run around £15-£25 per month, which is pretty good compared to prevailing American rates.  Note that doesn't include the BT leased landline (£10/mo), which is apparently unavoidable even if you never use it.  Also note that many suppliers will throw in weekend/off-peak international calls (e.g. to America) for free, so push for a good deal and let them know you're comparing rates.

I've have BT since we moved here.  I have no complaints.  They have a 5 pound a month option for unlimited calling abroad which works great for calling back to the States.  On the other hand TalkTalk is even cheaper promising better service!
