What can I apply for to work? Non-EU Family Member of Belgian Citizen

Hi all,

I have a question about non-eu family member living in the UK with his Belgian Partner.

We got married in Belgium but we only lived in the UK together as a married couple. In the short term, we would like to move back to Belgium but I am a non-eu family member, and I would need a visa to go to Belgium (even visiting) thanks to Brexit.

My partner's work is relocatable, so he could work from Belgium. But mine isn't and I would need to find a job in Belgium. How do I go about that? His salary would definitely be enough for the financial requirements of a Family Reunification visa but that can take months and we don't want to go separately. If we wanna move together, is there a way to show the financial requirement with a large sum in the bank to get the visa easier? So not relying on income but relying on the cash in bank?

I may be understanding visa requirements completely incorrectly.

Or could I apply for a job which would give me a single permit, and then I can change that single permit?

I have found in one of the posts that savings is a no go unless the law has changed at all.

Normally as a family member of European citizen proved by marriage certificate you wont need a visa as the freedom of movement will be extended to you too as EU citizen family member. The biggest challenge would be for you to find a job in Belgium as there might be language barriers.

Hello,

In reality, many of your fears are unfounded.

Since your partner is Belgian, and you have probably been married for some time, you will automatically receive a residence permit "F" (corresponding to the status of member of a Belgian family).

For work, you will also automatically have a work authorization. However, you may need to have your diplomas and skills validated. Look on this site: https://www.enic-naric.net/belgium.aspx

The family reunification procedure is valid for the newlyweds. Go with your partner to the Belgian Embassy in London to initiate this. And when with him, you proceed to the registration in the Belgian city where you will reside, you will be given an orange residence permit before receiving the final one.

Thank you Phipiemar, we have been married over 5 years, and we were married in Belgium, so we are a registered married couple in Belgium.

So if we went to the consulate in London to start the process of moving, it should not be an issue? That sounds really good!
