How to save money in Austria

Hello everyone,

Did you plan your budget before your move to Austria? If so, how did you go about it?

How do you save money in your day to day life? Do you find there are any areas where you can't cut costs?

Do you have any tips about saving money in Austria? For example, getting the best deals on accommodation, grocery shopping and dining out, the best value transportation, etc..

Are there any apps or websites that have helped you to save money?

Transportation: You can get a year ticket for the public transportation which costs about 250 euros which is significantly cheaper than buying one monthly for about 50.
Eating out: Many restaurants do a very good affordable lunch menu but charge a ton for dinner.
Food: Food is very expensive here so check the local turkish/ oriental shops (especially for fresh produce).
Cultural: a Joanneum Museum ticket is good for 24 hours, so buy it at a time when you are at leisure to visit several of the museums (you can also get in free with a year ticket for the public transportation).
Clothing: Pretty expensive but certain shops offer good deals with their customer cards (eg. Orsay) C&A has a certain number of days peryear where everything is 20 percent off.
Winter- Winter is shockingly, appallingly, cold- a good coat is worth its weight in gold! make it a priority in your budget Down or wool are best (just my opinion;))

One thing shoppers should consider is that they should always look on Mariahilfer Strasse instead of Graben.

Mariahilfer Strasse is where the more affordable shopping outlets and eateries are in Wien. Any outlet in Wien Mitte/Vienna center is going to be very expensive since despite
its old world beauty, it is nonetheless designed to entice tourists.

I am refering to the prices in Graz, you would have to double check in Wien

In Wien, it works out to be €1 a day for a year ticket, and you can use everything, trams, metro, trains in the 100 zone.
